Star is a period-3 oscillator that was found by Hartmut Holzwart on February 16, 1993.[1] It is one of the few known oscillators that is a polyomino in one of its phases. In August, 2004 Jason Summers found a 20-glider synthesis of this oscillator.[2]

A related period-3 oscillator is 4 blocks on star, where four blocks are diagonally connected to and hassled by the star. Any or all of the blocks are optional; if present they are lethargic beacons.
