Hartmut Holzwart is a Life enthusiast who has made many notable discoveries, mostly relating to extensible spaceships.

He found the first spacefiller in September 1993, following a suggestion by Alan Hensel. He also found the first non-monotonic spaceship as well as several extensible spaceships including barge and wing.

He has constructed the vast majority of known greyships; extensible spaceships whose bodies are made up of an agar of density 1/2.

He also found the first c/4 diagonal puffer, the first c/4 diagonal period 12 spaceship, and the first c/2 orthogonal period 28 spaceship (with the help of Alan Hensel).

He constructed the first known wickstretcher, wickstretcher 1 with the help of Dean Hickerson, and later found the first c/4 diagonal wickstretcher, boatstretcher 1.
