One per generation is a 44-cell double tubstretcher that grows by exactly 1 cell per generation. It was created by Nicolay Beluchenko in September 2005 based on his tubstretcher modification of crab and a lightweight spaceship. It was made one cell smaller by David Bell.[1]

In July 2019, Chris Cain assembled a pattern based on one per generation, with the additional feature that from generation 47 on, its population count is exactly equal to its generation count, as shown below:[2]

x = 53, y = 54, rule = B3/S23 41bo$40bo$36bo3b3o$34b2o$35b2o11$47bobo$47b2o$48bo3$27b2o$26b2o$28bo 22bo$30b2o5bo7bo4bo$29bo6b2o6bo5b3o$36bobo5b3o$28bo2bo$20b2o5b2o2bobo$ 19b2o5bo5bobo$21bo4bobo4bobo$23b2o2bo6bo$23b2o$27bo$26bobo$27bobo$3bo 24bobo$3b2o24bo$2bobo19b2o$23b2o21b3o$25bo20bo$47bo$b2o$obo$2bo2$24b2o 21b2o$23bobo19b2ob2o$15b2o8bo12b2o5b4o$14bobo21bobo5b2o$16bo21bo2$23b 2o$22bobo$24bo! #C [[ THUMBSIZE 2 THEME 6 GRID GRIDMAJOR 0 SUPPRESS THUMBLAUNCH ]] #C [[ AUTOSTART GPS 10 THUMBSIZE 2 LOOP 100 ZOOM 6 WIDTH 800 HEIGHT 380 PAUSE 3 ]]
