Toaster (or lightweight volcano) is a period-5 oscillator that was found by Dean Hickerson on April 1, 1992[1] that produces sparks much like a lightweight spaceship on its left and right sides. Minimal changes can be done to change its symmetry type.

Generation 4 of toaster reveals its sparks

On November 19, 2021, Dongook Lee and Entity Valkyrie observed that a toaster can be phase shifted to produce an oscillator of period 5n + 2.[2]

Commonness

A stator variant of this oscillator appeared semi-naturally on April 27, 2018, in a symmetric soup submitted to Catagolue by Apple Bottom[3], and another on February 16, 2022, by Charity Engine[4].

As of May 30, 2023, no variants with less than order-4 symmetry have occurred seminaturally.

Variants

There exist multiple smaller oscillators that give off LWSS sparks on only a single side.
