A flip-flop may refer to one of three (non-equivalent) types of period 2 oscillator:
- Any period 2 oscillator.
- Any period 2 oscillator whose two phases are mirror images of one another. Examples include by flops.
- Any period 2 oscillator in which all rotor cells die from underpopulation. Examples include clock, fox, and the barberpoles.
In the latter sense it contrasts with on-off, which is a period 2 oscillator whose rotor cells die due to overpopulation. The term has also been used even more specifically to refer to phoenix 1.
