1000 signs you're not a very good Lifenthusiast Reloaded

Post by hotcrystal0 » October 9th, 2023, 1:56 pm

The original can be found here.

PLEASE READ THE RULES, ESPECIALLY RULE 1.

Rules:
1(MOST IMPORTANT): Your reasons CANNOT be targeted towards a specific user (e.g. they cannot be like “Your username contains a number greater than 66608”).
2: You can refer to things that actually happened before, but DO NOT make it “targeted” unless you’re referring to your past mistakes.
3: Do not violate forum rule 1.
3.3333333: Do not violate forum rule 2.
3.6666666: Do not violate any forum rules for that matter.
4: Do not make duplicate reasons.
5: If the rules are broken 3 times, then I will contact a moderator to lock this thread.
5.5: No intentionally breaking the rules to lock this thread.
We are currently at strike 1

The actual reasons
1. You celebrate for a day after discovering an extremely large P3 in WLS
2. You think Lifenthusiasts are categorized by post count and not by number of notable discoveries
3. You think lifeWiki contains ALL knowledge of CGoL
4. You discover something that was known back in 1969
5. You mix up oscillators and spaceships all the time
6. You modify a known spaceship slightly and claim you found a new spaceship
7. You get overjoyed when you found a 300-generation "methuselah"
8. You find a "methusaleh" (sic) of any length
9. You find a "new" still life
10. You ask what a glider is
11. You think a pattern you created can be copyrighted/NFTed/etc.
12. You mix up WLS and WSL
13. You mix up JLS and jslife
14. You mix up LLS and LSSS
15. You ask whether cubic or exponential growth in Life is possible

I'm going to agree with dvgrn on this one, and suggest that this thread be locked. There is just too much potential for abuse. No matter how much restrictions you place, the fact is that a thread like this is in all probability going to devolve into attacks on newbies. Case in point: your reasons 12-14 can literally be applied to ONLY people who are not familiar with the search programs mentioned, and guess who fits in that category? Newbies.

How many experienced people don't know about them though? How many experienced people "mix up oscillators and spaceships all the time"? How many experienced people would "ask what a glider is"? The fact remains that newbies are by definition more likely to not know about these things. Also, #8 is biased against those for whom English is not a first language.

No, #8 isn’t. Plus, I used to mix up JLS and jslife sometimes in my head! Newbies may be more likely, but that does not mean it is targeted towards them.

Point taken. But what about the others, especially rules 4, 7, 9, and 10? My point is that if a newbie reads this thread, thinks "hey, that's me", and realizes that they have done some of these stuff, they may well go on to think, "this community isn't welcoming towards newbies like me; look, they made a whole thread about things that I do! I should leave," which is definitely not the kind of thing we want.

7,9,and 10 are not intended to be biased towards newbies, and dvgrn says that 4 is ok and does not violate forum rule 1

WLS is a search program similar to JLS.

17. You find a random P2 with no uses whatsoever amusing
18. You find this thread amusing(it’s not amusing)
19. You synthesize some object in 20 gliders when it could be done in 10

Code: Select all

x = 192, y = 53, rule = B3/S23
33$42b4o$41b6o$40b2ob4o$41b2o3$41b2o$39bo6bo$38bo8bo$38bo8bo$38b9o3$42b
4o$41b6o$40b2ob4o$41b2o!

Rules:
I think the example part of your rule 1 currently breaks your rules 1/2.

Anyways,
21. You think a knightship is a cane with a horse head on it.
22. You think normal Life is dumb so you always play other rules.
23. You think that normal Life is sort of like chess 960 because every time you play the cells are in a different starting position.
24. You think that if you do not get any alien objects in a census in another rule, then it is just the same as normal Life.
25. Your spaceships expire.
26. You never ever tried to promote your glider to a knightship.
27. what kind of website is this???

(inspired by the chess.com one)

Seriously?

protip: when a mod locks a thread, you probably shouldn't create a nearly identical thread with a couple haphazard added "rules" in a futile attempt to prevent it from going the same direction as the original.

29: You post random non-academic content outside of The Sandbox "just to see what the community will do"

Code: Select all

x = 192, y = 53, rule = B3/S23
