Thread for basic non-CGOL questions
Re: Thread for basic non-CGOL questions
Is it possible to have a rule where (stable, at least) object (or even just spaceship) speeds are bounded above some unreachable limit, say, c/2, and for any reachable speed there exists a higher reachable speed; that is to say, any (stable) object (/just spaceship) that exists in the rule can be caught up to by a spaceship (of higher speed)?
This would be interesting because it trivially implies that no object can be fast enough to be unreachable-- a phenomenon which crops up a lot in a lot of rules, incuding most visibly B2 rules; any domino with nothing in front of it or within two steps to its sides cannot be stopped from travelling at C forever. A similar phenomenon exists even in GoL; a sufficiently distant LWSS travelling through empty space away from some object is unreachable by said object (sure, you could send a superstring at it, but for any object with a certain horizontal width there is a distance such that the LWSS is unreachable even that way since the superstring's distance it could travel is bounded above by approximately the quantity of generations, divided by two.[citation needed]
The cool thing about the rule I described is that since (stable) object (/just spaceship) speeds are bounded above by an unreachable limit, all spaceships can be caught up to by an even faster ship.
EDIT: unrelatedly, what's the checkerboard dual of B3/S234c?

On white cells it behaves like B1e3ajkr5inqy7c/S1e2ei3ajkr4jr5inqy6cn7c8, while on black cells it behaves like B1e2-cn3-inqy4-ny5-ajkr6-ei7c8/S01e23-inqy45-ajkr67c8.

Re: Thread for basic non-CGOL questions
Here is a rule similar to what you are asking. If you could find a rule with similar mechanics where an adjustable spaceship is faster than all other kind of spaceship, I think it would meet your requirements. This one would not work because the small ship at the back is faster than all these adjustable ships.Moosey wrote: ↑September 4th, 2020, 10:24 amIs it possible to have a rule where (stable, at least) object (or even just spaceship) speeds are bounded above some unreachable limit, say, c/2, and for any reachable speed there exists a higher reachable speed; that is to say, any (stable) object (/just spaceship) that exists in the rule can be caught up to by a spaceship (of higher speed)?

If following spaceship hits the tail of the wickstretcher, then chasing spaceship is delayed and the line wickstretcher start to burning while the "fire" reach to the front of wickstretcher then wickstretcher delayed too.

Why are Corderships so much harder to find in B3/S236e, the one other rule where the switch engine works?

Is there even a way to stabilize the switch engine in that rule at all? I tried for about ten minutes and gave up.
Oscillator discussion is boring me out. I'll return when the cgol community switches to something else.

I was able to make these three corderships from the things in my cordership collection that actually worked at all. Two are mutually-canceling puffers, and one just happened to work in this rule as a spaceship as well.goldenratio wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2020, 11:31 pmIs there even a way to stabilize the switch engine in that rule at all?

Think you're right. I assume that's Life except for birth in a ship-shaped neighborhood. It supports Highlife replicators as well as some CGOL patterns (p46 guns with a tweak?). I haven't thought about it since then. What's the modern way of expressing that rule? Can you post an example in LifeViewer?Ian07 wrote: ↑October 3rd, 2020, 7:35 pmThink you're right. Re: Thread for basic non-CGOL questions
I understand that there are fake gliders and fake LWSSes that travel differently in other rules than Life but have the same pattern as a glider or LWSS, but is there such thing as a fake Cordership? Like a ship made of switch engines, but it moves differently in a different rule than it does in Life?

The switch engine works in B3/S236e (it's the only other rule where it works):HelicopterCat3 wrote: ↑October 23rd, 2020, 7:59 amI understand that there are fake gliders and fake LWSSes that travel differently in other rules than Life but have the same pattern as a glider or LWSS, but is there such thing as a fake Cordership?
