entirely new class of patterns?

Should we consider Gemini a spaceship, or should it belong to an entirely new class of patterns. Of course, the original Gemini is a spaceship, but the ability to be trivially modified to form spaceships of differing speeds differentiates it from any other known spaceship. I would like to know what others think before this is made into a legitimate pattern page.

This page is about the original Gemini spaceship. Geminoids, such as the one Dave Greene posted, are also individual spaceships. The entire set of Geminoids can be considered to be a VVSS, or versatile-velocity spaceship.
More specifically, the set of Geminoids has three degrees of freedom (period, vertical displacement, and horizontal displacement). This is the first set of spaceships to have more than one degree of freedom. --Calcyman 08:44, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
There you go: "Geminoid". We can use that term to refer to a spaceship that behaves in the way Gemini does. Gemini should be reserved for the name of the original spaceship. Keiji 10:13, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
I added the spaceship infobox. What would be the best representative image of Gemini? (I simply used the phase that Andrew provided it in.)

I wonder, if the speed specified is correct. Because (5120 + 1024) / 33699586 equals 3072/16849793 indeed Codeholic 09:16, 13 September 2011 (CDT)

When writing the velocity of a spaceship, it is conventional to give the speed as a ratio of its displacement in one direction (whichever is greatest) and its period, along with the slope at which it travels. For instance, a spaceship that travels one cell vertically and one cell horizontally in four generations does not have a velocity of (1 + 1) c / 4 = c/2 but rather, 'c/4 diagonal'. In this case, we have 5120 c / 33699586 = 2560c/16849793 with a slope of 5. It is also somewhat common to represent the velocity as (XX,YY)c/PP where 'XX' and 'YY' are the horizontal and vertical displacements and 'PP' is the period. In this case, we have (5120,1024)c/33699586

Categories: Spaceships with slope 2 and 3

Currently, this article is in Category: Spaceships with slope 2 as well as Category: Spaceships with slope 3, presumably just because the article originally covered all geminoids (see previous section). Since I see no reason for these categories for Gemini, I'm removing them. Micromegas (talk) 01:10, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Yes, that's why they were added. Removing them's fair, we should probably have a proper Geminoid article anyway. That said, our entire categorization of patterns is not currently well-suited for adjustable families (with different slopes, speeds, ...) where there's no a priori reason for preferring one member of the family over any other; we'll have to think about how to handle that at some point.
