A sqrtgun[note 1] is any glider-emitting pattern which emits its nth glider at a time asymptotically proportional to n². The first examples were constructed by Dean Hickerson around 1991, using periodic circuitry. The following larger stable sqrtgun circuit was assembled by Dave Greene in September 2018, using two different Herschel transceivers.
