The shuriken is a 20-cell still life with C4_1 rotational symmetry. It is one of the two smallest strict still lifes with 4-fold rotational symmetry, along with spiral.
Reactions
If a single cell is turned on in a specific place around one of the hooks, a shuriken can collapse into an iron and trans-table (Catagolue: here), like so:

This reaction was once used in the best synthesis for the resulting still life, but has since been superseded by a component-based synthesis.
Glider synthesis
All strict still lifes with a population of 21 or fewer cells, all oscillators with 16 or fewer cells, and all spaceships with 31 or fewer cells are known to be glider-constructible. A glider synthesis of this object can be found in the infobox to the right.

It is the thirty-fifth most common object in C4_1 symmetry on Catagolue.
This pattern has occurred naturally in Catagolue's asymmetric censuses, however details of its rarity are currently not known.
