## Metric for maximum speed

Is the maximum speed (across all range-1 rules) given by c in the L_infinity metric, rather than the L_1 metric? So the column should consist entirely of the letter 'c' and nothing else? (unsigned post by Calcyman)

But that wouldn't show the slope, and in general it wouldn't be informative compared to the current list. 77topaz (talk) 21:17, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

But my claim is that the current list is wrong: the maximum speed for a knightship, as far as I can see, is (2,1)c/2 rather than (2,1)c/3. Calcyman (talk) 21:27, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

I agree with Calcyman here; let's just get rid of the "absolute maximum" column. Also replying to Micromegas below, en passant: I think the table is otherwise fine. Obviously there's overlap with List of spaceships, but the two have a different focus, and overlap is not a bad thing in and on itself anyway. Orthogonality is not a worthwhile goal to pursue merely for its own sake. Apple Bottom (talk) 09:46, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

## Questioning the table in its current form

Apple Bottom questioned the need for the "Absolute maximum" column, and as someone who added another column, I would like to go further. When I added the "Example" column, I wasn't aware that there is an excellent table already at List of spaceships. That table - in its filtered form - is hardly longer than the table here, so the two are largely redundant. The table here is in the wrong location, since it's not just about oblique spaceships, but about spaceships that move in all directions.

Instead of listing the different directions in table form, we could use a map (i.e. a table showing x and y directions) similar to that at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_chess_piece#Movement type.

Insertion: I realize that for that, too, we would have a better location simply at Direction. Micromegas (talk) 08:58, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

The one thing that isn't included in the List of spaceships is the "Absolute maximum" column. But that is even less well placed here, since it is obviously simply about speed for a given direction, independent from any particular spaceship. This is also evident from the discussion of the metric for maximum speed in the preceding section, which should also be moved to talk:speed. BTW, the wording of the two speed columns is also questionable, as I will explain at talk:speed#Maximum speed. Micromegas (talk) 08:46, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

I vote to keep the table here, because it's useful as a reference for the terminology. I have referred to it before to remember terms such as 'ibisship' when describing Gemini's movement. Calcyman (talk) 14:21, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
