- Not to be confused with Rich's p16.
Rob's p16 is a period-16 oscillator that was found by Rob Liston on February 9, 2020 using Adam P. Goucher's apgsearch,[1] and first noticed by a human the next day.[2] It is the smallest known period-16 oscillator in terms of both population and bounding box, the first p16 to appear naturally, the first known strictly volatile p16, and the first new rotor discovered by asymmetric soup search since the 1980s.
It also gives off weak sparks,[3] which in addition to allowing for the construction of non-trivial higher-period oscillators as seen in a later section, can be used to filter an LWSS stream resulting in a reduction to the pseudo-period p16 glider gun.[4] On November 12, James Pascua constructed a p32 lumps of muck hassler using this oscillator.[5] Later James Pascua constructed a period-48 glider gun that is currently the smallest at that period, also using this oscillator.
Glider synthesis
A 17-glider synthesis of this oscillator was found by Tanner Jacobi the day of its discovery.[6] Liston found a second Rob's p16 soup on June 30,[7] leading to a 15-glider synthesis by Goldtiger997 the next day.[8] Yet another soup found by Liston in February 2021 reduced the cost to 13 gliders and then to 11 gliders.[9][10] A fifth soup by Adam P. Goucher (incidentally the first soup not found by Liston) led to a 10-glider synthesis,[11] which Dave Greene made a slow-salvo seed out of.[12] A C1 soup occurrence in January 2023 led to a 9-glider synthesis,[13] which was reduced to an 8-glider synthesis on April 2, 2023.[14][15]
Occurrence
- See also: List of common oscillators
As of June 2023, it has appeared 7 times in 455 trillion asymmetric soups.[16][17]
LCM oscillators
The LCM oscillators below are listed due to being the smallest known ones by population, while also satisfying the condition that at least one cell oscillates at the full period.
