Can't believe I missed that. Amazingly the 2G loaf+blinker popped in my head but I assumed they were closer apart than they actually were, so I only thought about the possibility of doing the left side in 2G. Anyway, nice!

Heh, I also checked distance for the 2G loaf+blinker against the left constellation, but somehow didn't look at the other pairing.

I looked through the first twenty-six C1 soups (out of 199) and found that these 23-bitters are cropping up in soups via all kinds of different mechanisms -- not just the loaf-plus-two-blinkers one. They're common enough that even in C2_1 and other symmetric soups, they're just as likely to show up in symmetrical groups, not just a single one at the center of symmetry. Here's a completely different but equally workable 7G method:

There's a fairly large mess left behind, so probably Catagolue will reject any attempt to submit a complete synthesis. I'm still looking through Shinjuku documentation and other people's notes, to try and figure out how to contribute a synthesis like this without using the unmystical box.

EDIT: And for Advanced Ugliness, there's one soup for xs19_cikmhbgzx641, which at one stage resolves into a pre-blinker, R-pentomino, pre-LOM, pre-TL, and pi (plus two beehives, but you only need one of them). Hopefully a later stage will turn out to be tractable, since this would be a tough combination to get going all at once, and again it leaves a lot of mess to clean up.

EDIT: Replaced invalid synthesis that I originally didn't notice.
EDIT 2: And two more. Unfortunately the script has a tendency to place gliders so close to each other that they destroy each other before reaching their destination.

The last one was on December 15th by Alex Greason. However, now really wouldn't be a good time to run it because it looks like the job process is stuck indefinitely: https://gitlab.com/apgoucher/catagolue/-/jobs Anything submitted to the queue is apparently just going to be removed from it without actually updating the syntheses. Thankfully the job log allows me to recover the RLEs each time, but it would certainly be nice to get this resolved first.

There's something sinister about bi-pentadecathlon 1. The great majority of them form from a traffic light colliding with a well-developed pi mushroom, and then some kind of spark is applied at the back. Could this be marshalled to give a synth cheaper than 8 gliders?

Yes, the update process is designed to never 'lose' RLEs in the event of failure, which also means these invalid components (how did they get in here?) will keep stopping the update process from succeeding. I'll endeavour to intervene relatively soon.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

It looks like those bait still lifes are all being done at two gliders per object. Have you been able to get the 3G search scripts to run? It's fairly easy to get them working. Let me know if you have any trouble setting them up.

It will be interesting to see how many synth costs drop when those adjustments go through in Catagolue. Nice finds, Kazyan and testitemqlstudop!

Seems like the Average Cost column in the LifeWiki table by bit count is going to go out of date fairly regularly, but I think the max costs are correct for now. Maybe the 5G search will eventually manage a similar trick for 11 bits, though; there are already only half a dozen expensive 7G recipes left.

I'm probably going to be looking at the new results during the weekend following this one, so I'll post the new/improved syntheses here when I'm done (using lifelib to speed up the process of finding the useful ones).

It's significantly cheaper than the incremental synthesis that's on Catagolue now -- 22 gliders instead of 48 -- but I wasn't able to get the stubbornly nonmagical box to accept this recipe, last time I tried. Not sure why. Also not sure if it's really a good idea to submit it again, since it's admittedly a lot uglier than the clever incremental synthesis.

The big advantage that Mark Niemiec's database still has over the Catagolue/Shinjuku system is that multiple synthesis methods can be recorded for each object. If an Object X has to be constructed to one side of an already existing object, as part of a larger synthesis, and the cheapest recipe doesn't have enough clearance but a more expensive recipe does... it would be really nice to be able to keep a record of both recipe options, instead of losing access to an expensive-but-high-clearance recipe as soon as a cheap-but-messy one comes along.

Has anyone thought about ways to keep those kinds of alternate syntheses available somehow in Catagolue/Shinjuku?
