Is the goal to find a stabilization for the 6x6 p2 area in the center? Have you set up the problem in JLS and run a search?
Actually, it is just the 4x4 area that I tried to stabilize but the 6x6 shown is the only way. I don't have any programs for oscillators. I'm lazy and most programs doesn't even work because most of them are for macs and I have Windows 10.

p4 partial
I assume you mean that it's a partial with strict volatility equal to 1. How did you find it?
I believe it's the time to publicize my tools.
It's just hacked lifesrc 3.8, namely, add these lines at the beginning of the consistify10 function (line 705 in search.c):

Code: Select all

static Status
consistify10(Cell * cell)
{
	//add these lines
	State st0 = findCell(cell->row, cell->col, 0) -> state;
        State st1 = findCell(cell->row, cell->col, 1) -> state;
	State st2 = findCell(cell->row, cell->col, 2) -> state;
	State st3 = findCell(cell->row, cell->col, 3) -> state; //Get the states of a cell. Possibly inefficient
	if (st0 == ON  && st1 == OFF && st2 == ON  && st3 == OFF)  //this cell oscillates in period 2
	    return ERROR;
	if (st0 == OFF && st1 == ON  && st2 == OFF && st3 == ON )  //this cell oscillates in period 2
            return ERROR;
        if (st0 == ON  && st1 == ON  && st2 == ON  && st3 == ON)   //this cell is stable
	    return ERROR;
	//end of hack
My searches are conducted in terms of width, the same notion of that in gfind. The following returned negative results:
  • asymmetric width 13 (-a in gfind)
  • odd width 21 (-u in gfind)
  • even width 22 (-v in gfind)
  • gutter width 23 (-w in gfind)
The longest partial I've obtained is in asymmetric width 13:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
3bo13bobo$3b2o13bo$bo11b3o2b3o$o3bo5bo2b2o2bo2bo$bobobobobobo4b2o$6bo
9b2o2bo$bobobobob2o4bobo$o3bo5bo5bo2b2o$bo9b4o2b2o$3b2o7bobobobobo$3bo
15bo$19b2o!
I've also tried odd width 23 and even width 24.
Assume the search space is an mxn rectangle, where m=23 (for odd) or m=24 (for even). In lifesrc, the commands are

Code: Select all

lifesrcdumb -r23 -c36 -g4 -sr -og
or

Code: Select all

lifesrcdumb -r24 -c36 -g4 -sr -og
.
A "x 1 31 m 36" command in the runtime is used to make sure that negative results returned from the program are reliable.

The searches are organized in a way featuring symmetry breaking: consider the highest cell which is alive in some generation in the first column. There're only three possibilities of the cell up to time-shifting: alive in 3 generations, alive in 2 generations and alive in 1 generation. So I divided the search space according to where is the highest cell and how it oscillates. This picks out one element out of four in each isomorphism class(two patterns are in the same isomorphism class if one if a time-shift of the other).

The finished partial results are as following. All results are negative.

Code: Select all

23 ODD RESULTS
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (1,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (2,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (3,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (4,1) NEGATIVE IF ALIVE IN 1 GENERATION OR 3 GENERATIONS
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (9,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (10,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (11,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (12,1) NEGATIVE
OTHERS UNKNOWN

Code: Select all

24 EVEN RESULTS
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (4,1) NEGATIVE IF ALIVE IN 2 GENERATIONS
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (7,1) NEGATIVE IF ALIVE IN 2 GENERATIONS
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (11,1) NEGATIVE
FIRST ALIVE CELL AT (12,1) NEGATIVE
The partition of the search space made it particularly suitable for distributed hunting, like Sokwe's width 19 c/8 spaceship search.
I've not tried glide symmetry (-g in gfind) and diagonal symmetries.

Anybody have a decent lead on a synthesis yet? It's small enough to not look absolutely impossible, at least to my mostly untrained eye.

It breaks both the minimum population and bounding box records for a p16 oscillator. It has a few weak sparks, so it will probably give some smaller LCM oscillators, although I'm not sure if it will be useful beyond that.

I think this is also the first new object found from an asymmetric soup search since Achim Flammenkamp's results of the late 1980s.

This suggests a maybe tractable route, although I don't know that the grin (or equivalent) and the spark can be inserted in such close proximity:

Ouch! I think that's actually correct. Its high period, lack of stator, and asymmetry render it difficult to find by anything other than a very long soup search.

Also, it seems to merely be bad luck (rather than necessity) that it doesn't glide-reflect instead of staying in the same place. If it moved one cell each half-period, it would have been hilarious (front-running the dedicated c/8 search).

The irony there is that I probably wouldn't have even checked the xq16 tabulation (as opposed to the suspiciously shiny and new xp16 tabulation that mysteriously appeared), expecting it to just be the same old Coe ships — so it might very well have sat around for a bit before being noticed if that was the case.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reduce any other low periods using this, as the spark is too close to avoid destroying the oscillator. p240 can be easily done using a pentadecathlon, but it looks like the p48, p80, p96, and p144 pages won't need updating unless I'm missing something. Either way, massive congrats to Rob Liston!

That osc scares me; it looks so alien compared to others, like it came from an OCA

But congrats to Rliston! It's really cool to see another new osc, especially a weird-looking one. Has anyone written a wiki page? (Edit: Yes, Rob's p16)

That osc scares me; it looks so alien compared to others, like it came from an OCA

But congrats to Rliston! It's really cool to see another new osc, especially a weird-looking one. Has anyone written a wiki page? (Edit: Yes, Rob's p16)
I agree, it's extremely surprising to see such a small oscillator. When I saw it, I'm pretty sure that's a troll... Congrats!

The new p16 is interesting in that it combines a caterer-like spark and a thumb spark into one:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
2.C14.D$.BA2B11.BA2B$.2BA2BA9.ABA3B$DBA2BABA7.C2BA4B$.2B5AB7.7BA$.2B
2A5B6.A4BABAB$.2BAB3A2B6.B2ABA3BA$.4BAB2A7.BA2BAB2A$2BA5B7.2BAB2A2B$.
BA4B9.2A4B$.BA2B11.4B$2.B14.B!
As to whether it will have any use like a Rich's p16, that remains to be seen.

Belated congratulations! We'd have found it earlier if it were not that 8×9 bounding box is too large for exhaustive computer search.

Maybe it can filter some xWSS streams?

It has a few weak sparks, so it will probably give some smaller LCM oscillators, although I'm not sure if it will be useful beyond that.
You are definitely missing something.

I guess this counts as a new P48:
