The new p23 will be called David Hilbert. The reference should be obvious.

Amazing! No corollary hasslers that I can find this time, although there were some close-ish calls, like these two:

It's in jslife with a different stator — osc/o0008.lif, third row, first from the left. It can, however, be reduced:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

p23: ...
Amazing!

The 11 cycle idle time between the two beehive flips can be split in six different ways, giving populations 123 (0+11), 124 (1+10), 122 (2+9 as shown), 124 (3+8), 126 (4+7), and 124 (5+6). Combined with cis and trans versions, this gives 12 basic isomers.

It also looks like it ought to be possible to synthesize. Synthesizing one half of the stator is easy. Synthesizing the second will be a bit more of a challenge, and I suspect the biggest problem will be in inserting the two B heptominos into the assembled stator. Both of these should be slightly easier for the trans versions.

The new p23 will be called David Hilbert. The reference should be obvious.
We should probably leave the naming to the discoverer. Unless AbhpzTa is fine with that one.

Seconded. And may I question about the reference? (Not obvious to a non-english-meme speaker)

It's a reference to David Hilbert's 23 math problems. And thirded about letting the discoverer suggest/approve the name.

23 is an interesting number.

21 in brackets.

Bracket.

A great discovery! Instead of the somewhat clunky "122P23", I'd recommend "Okanishi's p23" or "Luka's p23" as (at least temporary) names, in the fashion of e.g. Elkies' p5 and Achim's p8 respectively.

I would call it "David Hilbert" or "AbhpzTa's p23". It is already in my set of user pages with 12 variants and a pseudo-period monomer.

In light of recent discoveries, here's a failed stabilisation of a p41 wick that's been known for quite a while now. Just in case.

There is a nice potential p49 in the osc-supported section of jslife consisting of 4 interacting traffic lights. According to JLS there is no p7 that can provide the necessary dot spark, but there is another possibility that looks like it has some promise:

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 27, rule = B3/S23

22b2o2$8b2o$6b4o$7b2o!
Can anyone find a p7 oscillator to complete this p49? If so, I think it will be the first p49 that is not a glider loop.

Looking some more at the osc-supported section of jslife, I noticed that one of the p72 reactions could be supported by Elkies' p36:

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 47, rule = B3/S23
18b2o$19bo6bo$19bobo4bo$20b2o6bo$27b2o$26b2o$27bo$28bo3$21bo$22bo$22b

6bo5b3o$16bobo4bo5bo$17b2o6bo$24b2o$23b2o$24bo$25bo3$18bo$19bo$19b2o$
18b2o$18bo6b2o$20bo4bobo$20bo6bo$27b2o!
At first I thought it didn't work, because a domino spark from the p36 interacts with the p72 engine where it wasn't supposed to. However, it turns out that this extra interaction actually saves the pattern. Without it, the p72 engine would destroy the p36 oscillators.

I've been trying to solve some old problems with new technology. Here is a stabilization of a p13 wick from jslife using one of the new p13 oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 91, y = 25, rule = B3/S23

This wick is very sparky, so I was hoping it might be useful for something else, but the sparks are very similar to those produced by the p13s that stabilize it. Does anyone see a use?
