Wow I just found this making a checkered board (obviously, someone has already found it anyway).

Code: Select all

I wonder, if this reaction has any value:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
b3o$b3o$b3o4$b3o$b3o$o3bo$2bo!
I tried to find a stable catalyst for it with Bellman (potentially resulting in a p38 oscillator), but no luck so far :(

David Eppstein's gfind program throws out spaceships which, when collided with a glider, produce some intriguing results. In the file below, the left reaction (c/3 orthogonal ship) results in nothing, while the right (c/4 orthogonal) results in a block and two gliders and nothing else!

These are some new patterns i haven't found on the wiki.
A p2 oscillator with population 14:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
8$13bo$13bo$12bo2bob2o$18bo$13b2o2bo2$15bobo$16b2o!
An extensible p2 oscillator with population 16 (it's a larger version of the clock, so someone has probably found it already):

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

Another p2 oscillator with population 17:

And a fuse consisting of beehives which leaves blinkers as debris behind it:

Has anyone found this Pi-C conduit?

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
.2A$.2A6.2A$9.A$7.A.A$7.2A$3C$2.C$3C$7.2A$7.A.A$9.A$9.2A!
I'm not sure if it's useful because of how close the C starts to the bottom eater, but it appears in just 12 generations, and although I was trying to finish it as a conduit at first I was trying to do something rather different and accidentally realized it might be able to make a conduit.

I've found a fuse where an octomino burns through a row of blinkers. The interesting thing is that it can be either orthogonal or oblique and is even able to change direction.

Also, if it's burning oblique and the last blinker in the row is out of period, it's converted into a pi-heptomino:

Nice! It looked like it might be possible to turn it round a corner with the pi-heptomino reaction, but it doesn't quite work - the pattern interacts with the new blinkers before the pi-heptomino is produced.

EDIT: Two of them can interact and suppress each other's debris:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 60, rule = B3/S23

$3bo9bo$2b3o8bo$b2ob2o4bo$9b3o$8b2ob2o!
Maybe other interactions are possible too? (Could this be the core of the next Caterpillar?)

If my creation burns through three rows of blinkers, it leaves blinkers behind and emits gliders every 11 generations:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 170, rule = B3/S23
3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo
2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$

o$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$
o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$
3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo
2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$

o$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo2$3bo$3bo$3bo2$o5bo$o5bo$o5bo$3bo$2b3o$b2ob2o!
And if the two-row version gets hit by a glider, it stops and a herschel forms:

Code: Select all

x = 44, y = 67, rule = B3/S23
6$24bo$24bo$24bo2$21bo$21bo$21bo2$24bo$24bo$24bo2$21bo$21bo$21bo2$24bo

34bo$21bo11b2o$21bo11bobo$21bo$24bo$23b3o$22b2ob2o!
If it's supported by blocks, it burns cleanly:

Code: Select all

x = 72, y = 75, rule = B3/S23
13$43bo4b2o$43bo4b2o$43bo2$34b2o4bo$34b2o4bo$40bo2$43bo4b2o$43bo4b2o$

o$40bo2$43bo4b2o$43bo4b2o$43bo2$34b2o4bo$34b2o4bo$40bo2$43bo4b2o$43bo
4b2o$43bo2$34b2o4bo$34b2o4bo$40bo2$43bo4b2o$43bo4b2o$43bo2$34b2o4bo$
34b2o4bo$40bo2$43bo4b2o$43bo4b2o$43bo2$34b2o4bo$34b2o4bo$40bo$43bo$42b
3o3b2o$41b2ob2o2b2o!
In this pattern I convert the 2-row version into a 3-row one. However I haven't found out yet how to reverse the process. In this (unfortunately dirty) version a pi heptomino forms.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 101, rule = B3/S23
5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo$2bo$2bo3$4b3o3$2bo$2bo$2bo$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo5bo$2bo5bo

$2bo5bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo5bo$2bo5bo$2bo5bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo5bo$2bo5bo
$2bo5bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo5bo$2bo5bo$2bo5bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo$2bo$2bo2$
5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo$2bo$2bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo$2bo$2bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo2$2bo$
2bo$2bo2$5bo$5bo$5bo$2bo$b3o$2ob2o!
When two of them collide, a pond and two pi-heptominoes form:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 29, rule = B3/S23
16$13b2ob2o$14b3o$15bo3$12bo$11b3o$10b2ob2o!

That might be mostly a rhetorical question, but I feel like answering it anyway. Unfortunately these don't look like a new Caterpillar core reaction, for several reasons:
  • 1) Caterpillar-type spaceships need to be able to re-burn their fuses multiple times, which basically means that the fuse's output has to be exactly the same as its input (with some optional spatial offset and/or phase change). This is hard to arrange, but not quite as hard as it might seem: for example, at the bottom of this post is a new reburnable fuse from just a couple of months ago, found while looking for something else.

    2) Something that travels along the fuse has to be able to throw off gliders or spaceships or something versatile enough to build things with. The pi-plus-three-blinkers fuse throws off plenty of output gliders, but only by burning blinkers that there's no way to replace.

    3) Another key property of Caterpillar reactions might be summarized as: "The slower the better". These fuses move too quickly to be useful.
Caterpillar-type spaceships travel at the speed of their fuses, throwing off whatever moving objects are needed to travel ahead of the spaceship to build more fuse/track, and also clean up the track behind the spaceship. If your fuse reaction is too fast, it becomes very difficult to send anything on ahead to build more track.

These B- and pi-based fuses all seem to travel at c/2 -- or even 4c/7, in the case of the pi-plus-three-blinkers reaction. I think that pretty much guarantees that they won't be a useful part of a larger Caterpillar pattern; they could conceivably be used as a decoration somewhere, I suppose, but that's a bit of a stretch...!

This Blockic seed of 4 blocks produces an LWSS:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 23, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o12$17b2o$12b2o3b2o$12b2o$8b2o$8b2o2$3b2o$3b2o!
A fifth block is needed to cleanup the remaining block:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 22, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o12$17b2o$12b2o3b2o$12b2o$8b2o$8b2o$18b2o$3b2o13b2o$3b2o!

A while back, I posted a Cordership-loaf reaction that restored the loaf, but made two extra beehives. Here is a remarkably simple p768 Cordership heisenburp:

Another transparent loaf -- nice! Guess I missed it last time around... You could replace one of those glider guns by a single block, with a little rearranging:

Code: Select all

The heisenburp itself is just 153x241, using a spaceship size of 63x58! (For comparison, a scaled glider heisenburp would have to be about 8x13.)

Minimum period is 513.

The 3-bit spark that actually triggers the loaf reaction is very common, and it works with another common spark too.

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

I wonder if it's possible to catalyse the beehives to produce similar sparks? If so then maybe this could lead to new oscillators or signal circuitry. (The block-eats-beehive reaction doesn't quite work in this regard.)

EDIT: Wow! Bellman found this on the first test run. I'm not sure how practically useful it is, but still: Wow! I'll set a longer search going - who knows what else is in there!

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

Guam wrote:2 gliders (G0) to glider converter with repeat time 51:
It reflects every other glider!

The gliders don't have to be evenly spaced.

This one is quite useful for counting in binary since it takes two gliders on the same track to produce one output glider. A simple application is to multiply the period of a glider gun (>p50) by any power of two. The bonus is that the output is at 90 degrees and can be redirected in tight spaces. High period guns can possibly be reduced in size if their period is even (or divisible by a power of two).

Random example using a gun from jslife collection:

Code: Select all

x = 130, y = 167, rule = B3/S23

Yes! We've had period 5, period 7, period 22, etc. versions of this for a long time, which are actually glider-to-Herschel converters as well as glider reflectors. But a small stable period doubler for a glider stream is a huge step forward.

The 2G-to-G that needs asynchronous gliders from two directions isn't quite so new-and-wonderful -- for example, there's an often-rediscovered variant of Paul Callahan's 2G-to-H converter that can do something similar:

Code: Select all

#C 'glider stopper' variant of a Herschel receiver
#C (it stops a glider from the SE if a glider from the SW gets there first,
#C assuming you start from the 'clean' state with no beehive)
x = 39, y = 26, rule = B3/S23

2o$13b2o$12bo2bo$13b2o$17b2o$17bobo$9bo7bo$9b2o$8bobo3$13b2o$13b2o!
Even more exciting, the fast 0-offset 2G reflector is wonderfully Spartan -- trivially glider-constructible or slow-salvo-constructible. It's probably possible to build a smaller and more efficient Geminoid replicator unit now (though I suppose that may not be as interesting for most people as it is for me...!)
knightlife wrote:This one is quite useful for counting in binary since it takes two gliders on the same track to produce one output glider. A simple application is to multiply the period of a glider gun (>p50) by any power of two.
In the context of Herschel circuitry, two of them will also function as a simple two-way switch, turning alternate signals onto different signal tracks. Here again the input signals can be asynchronous (not regularly spaced). Because the inputs are two gliders on the same track, you can adjust the reflectors to get the output glider on whatever lane you want... of a given square color, that is, depending on the glider source. This is a color-changing reflector -- unlike the Snark, but like the p4/5/6/7/8 boat+domino reflectors.

For slow Herschel circuitry you could combine this with an H-to-2G converter to get an adjustable glider output, reflecting the final glider stream either left or right:

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 60, rule = B3/S23

I was so bored with Bellman, I put in an LWSS and said "OK, what catalysts can I find for it?" I found a way to eat an LWSS with two blocks.

The two blocks are also half of a 'Blockade', which could make it easier to synthesise as part of a larger pattern?

This was already posted elsewhere, but extreme serendipity made this stable Cordership heisenburp, which I call the Model D, relatively tiny:

While trying to find methuselahs in a 10x5 bounding box I found this pattern that not only has a twin hat in its final census, but also exhibits a Pi velocity of (8,10)c/43:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
2b3o4bo$bobo5bo$bob2o2bo$2o4b2obo$bo3bo2bo!
In addition, I found this reaction (not when trying to find methuselahs) where an R interacts with a block turning it into a beehive, then later turns it back into a block in the same place (maybe somebody could incorporate it into a conduit):

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
2o4bo$2o4b3o$7bo!
