This is an artifact from before hook (the 4-cell pattern found in the still life) had its own article. I've just removed it.

  • In the clearance page, the pattern doesn't show directly how the eater "allows gliders to pass one lane closer on the southeast side". The comparison can be made:

    Code: Select all

    x = 33, y = 22, rule = B3/S23
    bo19bo$2bo19bo$3o17b3o4$14b2o$11b2o2bo$12bobo$12bob2o$9b2obo16b2o$9bo
    2bo16bo$10b2o18b3o$32bo6$9b3o18b3o$11bo20bo$10bo20bo!

Moreover, given "Fx119 inserter has an unusually high 27hd clearance", I suppose "...allows gliders to pass one lane closer on the southeast side" need to be modified to "allows gliders to pass one lane(or, equivalently, 1hd) closer on the southeast side".
  • In the glider gun page, there is no need for such a specific sentence as "a period 435 glider gun is shown using Karel's p15".
  • In the eater 2 page, there is a red link to "gliderless gun 1". Is it for the following pattern taken here?

    Code: Select all

Did you know...

15. ... that the first spaceship found in Conway's Game of Life that travels in an oblique direction was discovered in 2018?

Nah, we can leave that as it is -- 2010 is correct. The Gemini is a perfectly valid spaceship, just not an elementary one. We already have a Did-you-know #66 for Sir Robin.

Yes, that definition -- copied straight from the dictionary page on pentadecathlon.com -- has caused a lot of confusion over the years. The definition is clear enough, but it's not at all clear what the concept of "zone of influence" is actually good for. There's an old forum thread started by Nathaniel, but there don't seem to be any definite conclusions there.

Here's my standard counterexample to show that the missing corners in the range-2 "zone of influence" can actually affect the center cell in some cases. (In other words, lightspeed diagonal communication is perfectly possible).
> What is the shape of the "zone of influence" after an arbitrary
> number of gens?

A big square with side 2t+1. Simple example: look at a square, any size, with a diagonal fuse -- just one semi-infinite line of cells -- cutting it in half and ending at one of the corners. Whether that corner cell at (t,t) is OFF or ON will affect the state of the center cell at time t. And there seems to be no shortage of possible ways for similar lightspeed effects to travel through busier and/or more heavily populated patterns.
So the pentadecathlon.com "zone of influence", if it's a useful concept at all, must be related to some additional unstated premise or other.

Maybe it's something like this?

"If a cell's range-N Zone of Influence consists entirely of OFF cells at T=0, then the cell will still be OFF at T=N."

But is the Zone of Influence, as it's currently defined, the minimum set of cells for which the above statement is always true? Seems like the region could be reduced to a simple radius-N diamond in that case.

EDIT: Found a discussion about this from April 2005 in my old emails. HK's response seems to say that the pentadecathlon.com definition may or may not be useful above N=2:
Heinrich Koenig wrote:"Zone of Influence":

This is based on my studying of P2 oscillators, and may be more
specific to that than I thought. In my playing around with them,it
seems obvious that the corner has no influence over the "shape" of
oscillators...

The way I think of it is that each cell has multiple paths from the
center cell to every cell within the zone. Every cell in the zone of
Order 2 has at least 2 such paths. The corners have only one
possible, the exact diagonal. You get Order 3 by applying Order 2 to
the outer edge cells. Now I haven't put as much time into P3
oscillators, so I'm not sure if the corners should be clipped as
shown, or only the actual corners.

Hmm, that link has been "Gliderless gun 1" since Nathaniel invented the page back in 2009. I'm not finding any uses of the term "gliderless gun 1", though I may be missing something of course. I've changed that link to point to the period-44 MWSS gun.

The gliderless-guns category seems to owe its existence to a question posted by Dieter Leithner:
On 9 August 1996, Dieter Leithner wrote:Are other glider-less spaceship factories known?
Before Dieter and Peter started their gun-collecting work, it seems like guns of any kind were rare enough that nobody really thought they needed subcategories -- e.g., there were no odd-period guns of any kind until 1995. Paul Callahan was hunting for gliderless spaceship outputs from p30 and p46 shuttles back in March 1995, but I don't think a "gliderless gun 1" came out of that project, just more glider guns.

Anyway, the alias "gliderless gun 1" wouldn't be appropriate for the p44 MWSS gun. It wasn't discovered until April 1997; Dieter's p46 LWSS gun showed up the previous year, in the above August 9 posting (but it doesn't have eater2s in it, so that can't have been the intention of the link):

... and that gun in turn was reduced shortly after that, and there quickly got to be so many gliderless guns that it wouldn't make any sense to try to number them sequentially.

Leithner also labeled David Buckingham's p345 LWSS gun "gliderless", presumably in the sense that gliders were not involved in the production of the LWSSes. Not sure if that would really count as "gliderless gun 1", though:

The LifeWlki page for Boojum Reflector lists a P226 normal shuttle, but that's the wrong shuttle. It's meant to be this P225 one:

Code: Select all

x = 75, y = 51, rule = B3/S23

You notice that the hive is deleted by the glider that is meant to be the output, which releases a different glider (that was meant to delete that hive).

All absolutely true. Would you mind patching up that article yourself? You have a lot more experience working with embedded LifeViewers than most people do.

At your request, I've added the trusted flag to "Entity Valkyrie 2" instead of "Entity Valkyrie". It would be simpler if you just used your previous account, so please let me know if you've changed your mind and I'll switch the trusted flag back to "Entity Valkyrie". Assuming you stick with your new EV2 account, my suggestion would be that you leave your old "Entity Valkyrie" talk page where it is -- but read it over again, if possible.

Right now there's a nice new empty "Entity Valkyrie 2" talk page. If history is any guide, as you work on LifeWiki edits, people will need to get in touch with you and explain any edits they have to make to your work. Please keep a close eye on your talk page and keep up your end of the conversations that get started there.

Besides that, please do go back to finding and repairing the kinds of problems with LifeWiki articles that you've pointed out above. You've done a lot of good work along those lines in the past.

There's no such thing on the LifeWiki as the "limited trust" setting you've been asking for, and nobody is even slightly interested in doing the very large amount of custom programming work that would be needed to add such a setting. Please follow the same self-policing rules that everyone else follows: if you can't trust yourself to make a useful contribution to an article, don't edit that article. Maybe put a comment on the article's talk page instead, if you're not sure (and don't forget to put four tildes after your comment, to sign it!).

Can someone with more template syntax knowledge than I have please look at these edits by Entity Valkyrie and try to fix the template? https://www.conwaylife.com/w/index.php? ... ldid=62836

Here's an example of what it's currently doing:

Sorry for double-posting but I'm pretty sure this got buried: can anyone else please try to fix Template:Conduit?

Example: Fx119 inserter currently displays an empty section for conduit information even though it's specified in the wikitext, and I have no clue why.

Just started a tiki bar topic on whether user subpages should be placed inside the main wiki categories, would like to hear what others think about this: https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/LifeWik ... categories

Is there a reason why this BF20H variant isn't on the main namespace?

Code: Select all

#C found in this page: https://conwaylife.com/wiki/User:Entity_Valkyrie_2/RF48H_variant
x = 25, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
22bo$14b2o6bo$15b2o5b3o$14b2o8bo$14bo6$3b2o$3bo7bo$2obo6bobo$o2b3o4bob
o$b2o3bo4bo$3b4o14b2o$3bo17bo$bobob2o3b2o3b2o5b3o$b2o2bo5bo3bo8bo$5bob
obobobobobo$6b2ob2obobob2o$12bobo$12bobo$13bo!
It's much smaller than the rectifier variant and it's stable, unlike the bouncer variant.

Just that nobody has put it there. EV's user-namespace article helps keep it from being forgotten, but unfortunately there aren't any links or citations or anything to say where the pattern came from, so it takes a bit of digging. I've been trying to make a habit of doing a scan through recent discoveries, right around the end of every year, adding terminology to the Life Lexicon and then to the LifeWiki. Not sure I'll have time to do that this winter, though -- hence the call for help.

This particular mechanism is Kazyan's "backscratcher", from 31 May 2019. It will end up in the Elementary Conduits collection, too, whenever someone does an update of that.

Can I please create Rule:StateInvestigator (so that I can view my StateInvestigator patterns in LifeViewer)? I am only semi-trusted (I can only create pages that start with "User:Entity Valkyrie 2", therefore I created User:Entity Valkyrie 2/Rule:StateInvestigator).

Excuse me, can you add the P5 pipsquirter information ontothe pipsquirter page? Entity Valkyrie 2 (talk) 04:53, 11 November 2019 (UTC) Excuse me, can you also specify what 28P7.4 is? It is mentioned in the site pre-pulsar shuttle 28. Entity Valkyrie 2 (talk) 08:10, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

For the page Spark, can you change the definition of "fountain" to "no cells one row behind" and add "superfountain" to mean "no cells two rows behind"? I noticed this because the fountain itself has cells 2 rows behind. Entity Valkyrie 2 (talk) 10:12, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

Can you please redirect "Corderwave" to "Switchwave"?

Shouldn't Blocked p4-1's RLE be updated with Sokwe's reduced stator he found in um, 2010?

Done. I had actually been thinking of adding this myself.
