Nice find! It's not really too confusing in practice, just a new HR48B -- but it's a wonderful minimalist example of how that subtle change in eater placement makes a large difference several ticks later and many cells away. The information about which eater is present propagates through the active reaction faster than c/2 diagonally (!).
Moosey wrote:A good way to show this is that the conduit can be chained up to other conduits, e.g. BRx46B...
Yup, there are quite a few B-input elementary conduits that connect equally well to either HR44B or HR48B. If you test with BRx46B specifically it's a bit difficult to get the input Herschel in and/or the output Herschel out, but here are a couple of complete loops showing the four-tick difference in timing:

Maybe it will turn out to be handy to have a drop-in circuit substitution like this that does a four-tick adjustment and doesn't change the signal's output color the way L112 vs. L156 does.

Or maybe when that B turns into an H, the new glider output will be good for something? Have to get rid of the extra block, but that can be done in all kinds of ways, some of them with even better repeat time than this standard method:

Code: Select all

Conduit files + scripts

Conduit stamp collection, 16 March 2019
The only new conduit added in this update is the bronco. The infrastructure of the collection, however, has undergone a major improvement.

The naming of the conduit files had become very messy after so many additions, so I wrote a script (sort_conduits.py) to impose a canonical ordering on the conduits based on their operating characteristics. The new file names for the conduits reflect this order.

More specifically, I rationalised the conduit names as consisting of one input descriptor and one or more output descriptors. The input descriptor is any one of BCDHLMPQRW or G with optional following integer (for tandem inputs). The output descriptor depends on whether it describes a spaceship or non-spaceship output:
• A non-spaceship descriptor lists output orientation, transit time from the input object and object type.
• A spaceship descriptor lists direction, lane number, temporal offset and object type (the last of which is the empty string for the glider).
Output descriptors are separated by underscores. A variant of a conduit is indicated by a lowercase letter after all output descriptors, and a new optional tag field comes at the end after a colon. This tag field can contain anything else pertinent to the conduit – name, catalysts used, etc. Even when the conduit itself did not change, I updated some names, especially those of the tandem-glider conduits, to match the canonical ordering.

I've also completed the renaming of the tandem glider input conduits, as well as the three conduits accepting a spaceship as input. This necessitated the following addition to the centre-cell diagram:

Code: Select all

x = 175, y = 22, rule = LifeHistory

(The patterns on the right are a visual aid to obtain the conduit name from the conduit pattern.) For the bistable switch, I just took the boat-hitting input as the first glider and placed the other glider as far inwards as possible while maintaining the canonical orientation. When new conduits are added, sort_conduits.py should be run (outside Golly) to restore the order. Then conduit_compiler.py should be run (inside Golly) to generate the new stamp collection; I've simplified the key function that sorts the input file names. If I have missed any conduits in the intervening period, or simply have new conduits, please let me know. ### Re: The Hunting of the Elementary Conduits

If I looked at ElementaryConduits_17May2018.zip correctly, the table of enumerations looks like the following code table. No usages of D (dove) seem to be in the collection, but various mentions are in the thread. LOM and E also get mentions. There are also (non-useful?) conduits for SE (Schick engine).

Code: Select all

-> B .C .H .P .Q .R .W .Gn
B .8 .. 18 .3 .. .4 .. .17
C .3 .3  1 .1 .. .1 .. .10
H 33 .4 25 .7 .1 13 .5 105
P 12 .7 14 .2 .2 14 .6 .17
Q .4 .. .6 .. .. .. .4 ..4
R 11 .1 12 .3 .. .4 .. .14
W .. .. .1 .. .. .. .. ..2
G .. .. .7 .. .. .8 .. .25

also P->L->G  and  H->M->G

A for awesome

### Re: The Hunting of the Elementary Conduits

If someone knows of a less obtrusive B eater (which would replace the gray cell) than the standard block and eater 1, this would be a new R-to-H involving two known transparent components (one of them an unknown placement):

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 29, rule = LifeHistory
24.A$23.A.A$23.A.A$22.2A.3A$23.B4.A$21.B2AB3A$9.2A6.2AB.B2A.A$8.B2AB4. A2BA2B$9.4B.B2.2A3B$10.13B$9.14B$8.13B.B2A$8.B2C9B2.BA.A$8.2B2C9B4.A$
8.2BC10B4.2A$8.11B$8.10B$8.8B$8.7B$8.8B$3.13B$.D11B2A2B$B3D9B2A2BF$.D BD13B$3.D12B$5.2B2.2B2.B$12.3B$11.B2AB$12.2A!
Its utility would even then be somewhat questionable, because of the awkward input placement and the necessity of following it with a dependent conduit (which would constrict the input even more).

What's wrong with the standard block and eater 1? It seems to work:

It looks like a periodic conduit, but it's actually not, as far as circuitry is concerned. The p6 pipsquirter deletes an Annoying Beehive, but it works the same way regardless of relative timing. At worst, it takes 5 ticks longer to clean it up.

I thought maybe I could just put some kind of stable eater up there at the top, but apparently not.

You didn't mention how you get the Herschel out of there. Seems like pretty much every conduit has some kind of catalyst somewhere northeast of the Herschel, that gets in the way of the input Herschel's FNG. (?) (Except for F166, but that's hopeless also for different reasons.)

It won't break any glider-gun records, but might come in handy for building shotguns or something, by adding a dependent conduit and then an edge-shooter.

We haven't ever done any kind of thorough collection of periodic circuitry. Hersrch had various periodic components available for cases where that improved the bounding box, but by the time elementary conduits came along it wasn't clear where to collect periodic stuff.

There would be thousands of periodic conduits by now if we were paying attention, no doubt. Seems like their main use would be in the gun collection, but it's not clear that they would improve things very often.

That's incredible! That catalyst will have a ton of utility in other places (along with the loaf + big random SL catalyst from my attempts, which is the same interaction but has different clearance). Just as an example, here's a trivial H catalyst (both variants):

Code: Select all

x = 38, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
11b2o24bo$12bo22b3o$12bob2o11b2o5bo$10b3obo10b3obo4b2o$4bo4bo4bo9bo4bo

$10b2obo$11bo$11bobo$12b2o$b3o23b3o$2bo25bo$3o23b3o! This is just the first example I could find — in my various attempts to find conduits, this type of interaction (for which a ship+eater irritatingly doesn't quite work) occurs quite frequently, maybe just slightly less often than the ship+eater catalyst itself. Also, this isn't quite the right thread for this all, but oh well. Even without alternate applications of the catalyst, EV2/AbhpzTa's new R49 Herschel conduit seems like a really interesting discovery! Here's something I happened to try in passing: with just the right suppression of an unmodified Fx119's output gliders, it's possible to tack on an R49 and save the Fx119's first natural glider output as well as the Herschel output -- Code: Select all x = 37, y = 55, rule = LifeHistory 4.4B19.D$5.4B17.3D$6.4B15.D2B2D$7.4B14.5B$8.4B5.2A5.6B$9.4B5.A6.6B$10.4B4.A.AB2.8B$11.4B4.2AB2.9B$9.7B5.12B$7.9B5.12B$6.11B4.10B.B2A$7.

This produces a glider on the inside of the turn, which is relatively rare. I guess the composite conduit is a bit too big to improve anything much in the gun collection, but being able to get a forward glider well ahead of an output B or Herschel like this... well, it might allow for some new factories that need two-signal synchronization, or something like that. If I remember right, there used to be a lot of situations where R64+Fx119 or Fx119+R64+Fx77 would have been useful, and it was awkward making anything like that work -- by the time you did Fx119+R64+F117, it took up a painful amount of space. This seems like a relatively tight turn, and there are even quite a few transparent lanes nearby, between 2 and 10 lanes south of the the FNG output. Not sure exactly what that will be useful for, either, but it seems promising. I haven't done anything like a thorough survey, but it looks like there are some other elementary-conduit connections with that same initial eater catalyst that will fit after the Fx119+R49, like Code: Select all x = 39, y = 58, rule = LifeHistory 3.4B$4.4B$5.4B14.A9.A4.B$6.4B13.3A5.3A3.2B$7.4B15.A3.A5.3B$8.4B13.2A.

Am I missing any good tricks with all those SW-traveling gliders, most of which have to be suppressed? Or what else can the R49 do that we couldn't do before?

These both appear to be "theoretical" elementary conduits, not the kind of thing that would actually go in the Elementary Conduits Collection. It seems like they'll only work if a Herschel or B-heptomino magically appears in the Life universe in just the right place.

For the Herschel period tripler, the Herschel would ordinarily travel to that input location straight through the block you've added as a catalyst, and it's not in one of the standard transparent-block positions. So just getting the Herschel in to that position would a fairly expensive construction operation. I think the same is true of the blinker-keeper B-heptomino input. If you can't find any existing conduit that can connect to a new potential conduit, then the new conduit isn't really a conduit (yet, until the connection problem gets solved).

The standard suggestion is to be really careful to start these kinds of conduit explorations with an HFx58B or a BFx59H, or something along those lines -- and only add catalysts in places that won't get in the way of the input conduit. That way you don't lose as much time inventing mechanisms that can't connect to anything.

Here's a new conduit, HL82R (not to be confused with the almost identically named HL83R), along with an example Lx169 built from it:

A new fast way to delete B's natural block with its Herschel's FNG (or a BF20H conduit in signal-ese), with a useful amount of clearance:

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 31, rule = LifeHistory
26.3B$25.6B$24.8B$25.9B$24.11B$22.14B$15.2B2.16B$14.C7BD11B$12.3BC6BD

EDIT: If course, I spoke too soon. There are only a handful of conduits with B outputs that can accommodate that drifter-like catalyst. It's a handful more than we had before, though.
R-to-B loaf works! See these pages:

### Re: The Hunting of the Elementary Conduits

Thanks for this. I've played around with L130 and haven't yet found a smaller gun using it, but there's probably one out there.
