There's few interesting things, but I didn't think about looking through all 1701 objects. Does catagolue have a "sort by rarity" function?
I think you mean "haul" rather than "soup". And if you check the Occurrences column, you'll find the objects are already sorted by their number of occurrences -- which is a good approximation of rarity, at least until you get down to the objects with only one occurence each (where it will turn out that some were much luckier finds than others).

If there's nothing particularly worth seeing in the haul, there's no need to post this kind of announcement in the Soup Search Results thread. Half a billion soups is moderately large for a single haul, but Rob Liston for example is contributing that many soups to C1 every couple of hours these days.

Yeah, I meant haul.

I know the 1-occurrence objects are at the bottom, but some of the still lives have occured 200 times in C1 but some have only occured 40 or so in C1. I want the ones that occured only 40 times in C1 at the bottom .

Your best bet, I think, is to grep through the log for the haul in question, filtering out uninteresting stuff like still lifes and period-two oscillators. Using a random recent haul of mine as an example:

Code: Select all

$ wc -l log.1549048356.l_2echxv5D5hwx.txt
2941 log.1549048356.l_2echxv5D5hwx.txt

Actually, on a web browser, you can do a Ctrl-F and type in stuff like "xq", "yl", etc. But I meant "intersting" as in "rearely occuring in C1", and I want my hauls to be sorted by the object's rarity in C1!

Holy cow, an MWSS on HWSS 2 (43 in C1) and a new xp3 occurs in the same haul:

EDIT: The shocking thing is that the flotilla appears together,not like in most flotilla soups, where a first ship appears and a second ship is edge-shot.

That soup also has an LWSS shot to the north, making all three XWSSes in one soup.

Impressive! That makes it the smallest methuselah that's longer-lived than 32829M. And in terms of width+height+population, it's the smallest one that's longer-lived than simeks' Lidka predecessor.

Interestingly, 42 now has a double special significance in Catagolue:
  • The last time there was a contiguous range of still-life bit counts was {..., 40, 41, 42};
  • The last time there was a contiguous range of methuselah bins was {..., 40, 41, 42};
and, with high probability, that will remain the case forever.

That last is not an official prediction, though, right? It seems vaguely possible that the methuselah bin range might fill back in eventually -- weirder things have happened.

A new 41K methuselah showed up today, too, and even that has been fairly rare up to now but doesn't seem so impressive any more:

Depends on your definition of "near future". This is about as big a jump past lots of empty 1000-tick Catagolue bins as my ridiculously lucky early 42K methuselah was. Even with lots of people upgrading to methuselah-searching versions of apgsearch, this one might take a while to beat.

-- Also it depends on your definition of "record-breaker". Here's a way to add two ticks at the cost of two more columns, so it's only an improvement if longevity is more important than bounding box:

Code: Select all

#C 47489-tick,16-cell methuselah

If each new methuselah is named after someone married to (someone with the name of) the previous record-holder, what's the name for this new 16x16 -- "Marge", maybe?

Indeed! Perhaps 'Jeanne' would be an appropriate name for a methuselah with such anomalous longevity? This plot illustrates the surprising nature quite well:
jNRUznm.png
jNRUznm.png (33.52 KiB) Viewed 665 times
However, the longevity of this 47K methuselah is not nearly as disputed as that of Madame Calment... https://medium.com/@yurideigin/jaccuse- ... 87fc0c3133
-- Also it depends on your definition of "record-breaker". Here's a way to add two ticks at the cost of two more columns, so it's only an improvement if longevity is more important than bounding box:
Well, if longevity were more important than bounding box, it would be trumped by a glider aimed at a very distant blinker. I like Oscar's L/MCPS metric, which gives a ratio of 1283.4 for 47487M. Again, the longest-lived methuselah which beats that is simeks' remarkable 9x6 Lidka variant (1941.7).
