A simple blinker hassler, period 80, but unfortunately not the smallest one:

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 17, rule = b3/s23
13b2o13b2o$13b2o13b2o2$13bo15bo$14bo13bo$10b2o3bo11bo3b2o$15bo11bo$13b

It also works with p40,e.g.:

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 17, rule = b3/s23
14b2o13b2o$14b2o13b2o3$38bo$37bobo$2b2o11b3o13b2o3bo$b2obo8b2o2bo4b3o 5bo2bo$2bob2o6b2obo14b2ob2o2b2ob2o$o2b2o8bob2o21bo2bo$3o11b2o19bo3b2o$32bobo$33bo3$2b2o37b2o$2b2o37b2o!

The spark might be useful.

Cool! I've seen that big still life before, but I don't remember seeing it hassle a honeyfarm in that way. I'm guessing this was also discovered by hand. If by-hand searches can be so lucrative, I have high hopes for further automated searches.

I noticed that the blocker in the new p40 honeyfarm hassler could be replaced by a figure eight:

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 29, rule = B3/S23

Also, a new p16 oscillator was found by the mysterious "carybe" on Oct 22, 2018 (mentioned here):

Sadly, the basic eater 4 solution doesn't work:

Oddly enough, just looking at that new one and drawing in an eater by hand shaves off a lot more rows, though of course the eater intrudes into two new columns at the very bottom so it's not exactly a solution to the original problem any more.

Still I don't think the eater is going to get in the way of most things that a T-nose might get used for:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 38, rule = B3/S23

Any hope of bending the p5 90 degrees near the top, and preserving that useful high-clearance side of the T-nose by extending the search west instead of south? Or is this a problem that was already solved long ago? I haven't looked through jslife yet to see what's already available. N.B ofind is a BFS search so it will print out the shortest possible oscillator. However, I've seen it spitting out suboptimal solutions, so I guess there's a bug in there.

Well, there is this possibility of turning it entirely too soon (although the partial's a bit short):

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

So it might be possible to find a 'single engine gun'. Unfortunately it does not work with the p4 sparkers (jslife) we have for a p92 gun.
It only works if the spark is supplied at a multiple of p23 (otherwise it interferes with the shuttle in the wrong phase). The first good period for which we have a non-p46-based oscillator is Gabriel's p138, and this is exactly the mechanism in the p138 gun in Peter and Dieter's glider gun collection:

Code: Select all

A pentadecathlon can provide the magic spark to get the second glider out the other way, so there's this sequence of p30(2n+1) guns starting at p150. These won't set any records, but are edge-shooters and the longer ones are shaped roughly like thin diagonal rods, so they might be more friendly to work with when building large shotguns.
