### c/2 diagonal telegraph

Has anyone had a look recently at a glider construction for a c/2 diagonal signal? Unlike lightspeed diagonal signals, a single c/2 pulse doesn't seem like it's obviously beyond reach these days:

If one pulse turns out to be buildable, presumably at the end of an arbitrarily long ship or barge, then we can do the same thing twice to put the wire back where it started... and maybe use the distance between the pulses to carry information, similar to Jormungant's high-bandwidth telegraph. Not sure about that last part. It would be nice to be able to check for passing signals with some kind of Heisenburp device, but I haven't figured out how to make that work yet -- maybe a non-stable solution could be worked out, with a clever spark applied to the trailing single bit just as the wire is recovering? The period of such a spark would have to be fairly high, though. Here at least is a proof-of-concept way to turn a c/2-diagonal signal into other signal types. The rebuilding problem is nontrivial but probably already no worse than what lightspeed telegraphs have to do. The above is just the first thing that worked; can anyone find cheaper baits, preferably that preserve more of the wire? Terminating the wire with a ship end, or a ship-end-tie-ship, or maybe even some more complicated construct, could add more degrees of freedom to the search. ... Not sure what good all this would be, really -- we already have faster diagonal communication methods (2c/3, with an elbow option no less). Is there any predecessor, or something that collides with the barge that is known to make the signal? That would make things a lot easier. Based on the patterns given, there doesn't seem to be a clear way to collide something with a barge to give the signal, as there's already a barge being laid behind it, but on a different lane.
Wildmyron and I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules.

Things to work on:
- Find a (7,1)c/8 ship in a Non-totalistic rule

Nope, nothing known. That's the challenge.

To send one of these signals repeatably along a given finite length of wire, we'd need a glider recipe that produces that structure, optionally with some trailing junk that can be cleaned up with additional gliders.

A naive estimate of the difficulty is that this is a "40-bit" problem -- there are about 40 cells worth of space dust that will have to be constructed. That's maybe about the same as the weekender, which has about 80 cells but it's symmetrical -- or 25P3H1V0.1, which has more like 50 or 60 space-dust cells participating in the action (including both ON and OFF cells).

That makes it look like it might take 50-100 gliders to get one of these signals started -- a lot more than a 2c/3 diagonal signal, for sure, but maybe it's not completely impossible.

Can't just go aiming gliders at the long^N boat, though. Things won't turn out too well if it turns out there _isn't_ a signal going by. As it is, the only way to tell that there was a signal is the absence of a huge horrible explosion. Maybe something with a colliding *WSS and glider, or two gliders making a bigger spark?

Based on Extrementhusiast's burning-and-then-stabilizing reactions, I guess there's some hope of a double-width-line crosser mechanism -- don't know about an all-on-one-side one, though, at least without a painful amount of universal constructor trickery.

Not sure yet how best to extract information at the other end. For a high-bandwidth option, maybe count the number of ticks between the two half-signals and convert to binary somehow. Has anybody hunted for bait still lifes, or a custom extension at the far end, that can get a signal out while doing less damage than my initial proof of concept?

This is all a construction exercise with highly questionable utility, of course -- anyone with any sense would use a 2c/3 wire instead of one of these. So I think I'll be patient and wait for a script-built glider-to-c/2 converter.

Just wanted to say I'm rooting for you all, even if I have no idea how this stuff works. Very nice job with the post above, it seems quite easy now...perhaps longboats could be added while extending the tub afterwards to reduce cost, idk
