Re: Catagolue Oddities
How about just allowing double backups to show on the symmetry list but not on most popular?

Re: Catagolue Oddities
There is no valid reason to allow double backups.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!
Re: Catagolue Oddities
Yeah, I don't see any practical reason why you'd want to make a backup of what is already a backup, either.

Re: Catagolue Oddities
Other than having a backup that is more easily accessible (from the syetry list) esp. On mobile?

Re: Catagolue Oddities
With the rule B2i3ai4cei5c6c7/S2-ae3acein4-t5-aq6cei7c8, a lot of (C1!) sample soups don't appear to contain the objects they're supposed to contain. In particular, a majority of the soups tagged as "yl" (linear growth) don't actually produce any infinite growth when run. Because it's in the C1 symmetry, misalignment of symmetrical parts can't be to blame, so what's causing this?

An oscillator which is actually a linear growth.
An oscillator which is actually a linear growth.
Code: Select all
x = 49, y = 4, rule = B2kn3aijnr4acik8/S2n3-cek4aint5-aky67c8

Re: Catagolue Oddities
It's not the linear growth pattern itself, but a predecessor of it, which may be what is confusing apgsearch. There have been similar reported high-period oscillators that actually aren't such in other rules as well.
Re: Catagolue Oddities
The object https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp ... a991/b3s23 displays the correct object and links to soups, but instead of the correct name, it shows "?p4". Perhaps somebody gave this pattern the explicit name "?p4"?

Yes, a few objects have names like that:mniemiec wrote:The object https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp ... a991/b3s23 displays the correct object and links to soups, but instead of the correct name, it shows "?p4". Perhaps somebody gave this pattern the explicit name "?p4"?

In the small preview GIF, you mean? I don't see it.

To me, it looks like a clean puffer that leaves puffs of disappearing smoke that spontaneously appear well below the body of the ship, - in places where births could not possibly occur in any rule.danny wrote:Interesting glitch:

On topic, here is my PNG screenshot. I would be interested in seeing the quoted post's content, lest it be different than this photo. The lowermost black blinker-like cells start to even blink in and out of the background colour at a point.

Re: Catagolue Oddities
Isn't that simply because it's running 56 generations in 2 seconds, which is so fast that your SVG renderer actually skips frames?mniemiec wrote:To me, it looks like a clean puffer that leaves puffs of disappearing smoke that spontaneously appear well below the body of the ship, - in places where births could not possibly occur in any rule.danny wrote:Interesting glitch:

I've now slowed down high-period objects to 6 generations per second in the SVG so that all transitions are visible:

Could you be so kind and stop posting this sort of thing? It's hardly relevant, and not worth notifying every single last subscriber to the thread of.wwei23 wrote:This time the page loaded half right. But how do you load half a stylesheet properly?

Re: Catagolue Oddities
Yeah, it's just caused by browser issues rather than anything going wrong with Catagolue itself.

Re: Catagolue Oddities
I'll be honest - I was confused about how the peer-reviewing part of the apgsearch client worked, so I went to the source of apgsearch and made it report that I did a trillion soups for each haul of a million soups.
I ran it for a while and it was quite hilarious that on the Catagolue website it displayed my "hauls".
I was confused how my hauls even made it onto the Catagolue website without my IP being banned (somehow).
The next day, however, the hauls were erased.
I'm not sure if anyone remembers this, since it was a year or two ago...

Re: Catagolue Oddities
Both apgmera AND Catagolue messed up on this.
Apgsearch AND Catagolue really messed up here odd
https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp ... 3-enq4cint
It's a sqrt/log (I dont know which) but apgsearch labeled it as oscillator and Catagolue says it's valid and is indeed an oscillator...

Re: Catagolue Oddities
I think the reason it has a normal-looking Catagolue page is because automatically-checking-if-an-apgcode-is-valid function of Catagolue isn't performed for periods of 100 and over (presumably because it would take too long). Replacing the xp293 in the URL with xp100 returns a similar normal-looking page, while xp99 gives the expected apgcode-is-not-valid error page.
