First infinite growth in 2x2 (B36/S125)?

For discussion of specific patterns or specific families of patterns, both newly-discovered and well-known.

First infinite growth in 2x2 (B36/S125)?

Post by Nathaniel » June 29th, 2009, 2:54 am

Well, after running my census script on the 2x2 rule for a few hours, the following variant of the 2x2 glider popped out:

Code: Select all

#C c/8 line puffer in B36/S125
x = 4, y = 8, rule = B36/S125
3bo$2bo2$o$o2bo$obo2$2bo!
Does anyone know of an infinite growth pattern in 2x2 that has been discovered before this? This is the first that I know of, but I could of course just be unaware of some.

I don't. This is very cool. It can easily be modified:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 9, rule = B36/S125
4bo$3bo$2bo$6bo$o4bo$o2bo$obo2$2bo!
Doubled growth rate. Are there any glider rakes known? It may be possible to make a breeder.

No, I think yours is the first known. I hadn't found any other infinite growth patterns yet.

Does the golly census script work for 2x2 ?

Also, did any other interesting patterns or oscillators turn up in the census?

If there were, then we would have infinite growth already!

The golly script works beautifully for 2x2 (well, the version I have; I'll upload the new soup search script within a day or two after I iron out the last couple wrinkles). No other patterns came up that were as interesting as that infinite-growth one. You can see the current results here:

http://www.conwaylife.com/soup/census.asp?rule=B36/S125

Note that only objects with at least 25 occurrences are shown right now for technical reasons. This may or may not be changed in the future (I expect that lowering the threshold to 10 will be the change very soon). Also, don't mention dead links or anything on that soup search site to me yet -- I haven't announced it publicly yet for a reason ;)

Edit: I did find a neat oscillator in HighLife though, which you can see at rank #18 on the HighLife census page (follow the link above and look at the sidebar). It's almost surely well-known among people who have studied that rule, though.
