snudder thing: what about a SMOS made of a SMOS?
1. Use Rhombic's RuleSrc and make the following formation as a start:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
bo$2bo$3o5$3o$2bo$bo!
Set the generations to keep to 4. Now, wait, ships usually come from 60K to over 100K rules tested.

2. For a SMOS made of a SMOS, we would need a "very natural" SMOS that is versatile.

Some examples with a small c/2 ship

diagonal, 2c/40

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B2-ac3-aeqr4ciknry5-ikry6aei7c8/S1c2cei4w5n6c
7bobo$8bo6$o$bo$o!
diagonal, 3c/131

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = B2eik3cijry4aijntwy5ejknq6ek7c/S1c2ce3eq4et5c
11bo$10bo$11bo8$bo$obo!
orthogonal, c/44 (3 ships)

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 11, rule = B2en3acij4cijnyz5eqy6ci7/S12-an3acery4krz5cjny68
obo$bo3$6bo$5bo$6bo3$bo$obo!
different c/2:

diagonal, c/10

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B2cen3aij4j5c/S1e2acn3ij4jwy
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o!
diagonal, 3c/25

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 8, rule = B2ce3aijq/S1e2ace
5bobo$6bo4$o$bo$o!
diagonal, 4c/26

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B2cek3ijk4jqr5ac/S1e2ace3acnr4jnr5cinq6acn7c
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o!
diagonal, 3c/31:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 8, rule = B2-an3airy4jkrz5ciry6-cn/S1e2ckn3-cekn4aikqrwz5einqy6ek7c
5bobo$6bo4$o$bo$o!
orthogonal, 3c/38 (4 ships)

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 16, rule = B2cek3iy4ak/S1e2c3ceiry4y
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o3$o$bo$o3$5bo$4bobo!
There are probably several more with two copies which could be easily found.

And using the c/10 diagonal above, here's a 3c/59 orthogonal SMoSMoS:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 18, rule = B2-ak3aijq4jnqwz5c8/S1e2acn3eij4jqwy5ry
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o5$o$bo$o3$5bo$4bobo!
and another, 2c/63 orthogonal

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 18, rule = B2-ak3aijry4eijn5cijn6ac/S1e2acn3eijky4jnwy5ikr6k
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o5$o$bo$o3$5bo$4bobo!
The search that found these two ran pretty quickly, certainly less than a million rules.

Another SMoSMoS using the 3c/25 this time, 12c/107 orthogonal

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 26, rule = B2ce3aijq/S1e2ace3kq4ac5c
5bobo$6bo4$o$bo$o11$o$bo$o4$6bo$5bobo!
Currently running an almost certainly futile search for a SMoSMoSMoS...

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

@muzik: nice results, but could you please label them with at least their speed for the benefit of everyone reading?

@AforAmpere: That's quite a nice glide reflective diagonal ship. I haven't searched for many with that kind of geometry, I wonder how frequently they occur?

@Saka: it's not the first, there are some diagonal SMoS using two gliders earlier in the thread (I think by toroidalet)

Here are a few more SMoSMoS using the same diagonal c/10:

orthogonal 4c/140

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 22, rule = B2cen3aijry4cjnyz5ackq6-kn7/S1e2acn3ijy4jwy5cein
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o9$o$bo$o3$5bo$4bobo!
orthogonal c/50 (goes backwards relative to the others)

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 18, rule = B2cen3aijr4ijkn5cnr6n/S1e2acn3ijy4ijknqwy5iky6k7e
4bobo$5bo3$o$bo$o5$o$bo$o3$5bo$4bobo!
This one seemed the most promising for a SMoSMoSMoS - it works in 2^23 rules which is more than any of the others. This kind of search would benefit from Rhombic's idea of exhaustively trying all possible rules instead of randomly sampling them, but I just ran the search for a longer period of time in the hope that sufficient rules were sampled to find a result if one existed. No luck this time but I think there's likely to be one out there somewhere.

Hmm, a T+Glider ship would be kinda likely... unfortunately it's nighttime here so I cant search. My suggestion for you Merricans is to do it in T-life and do a formation where 2 gliders crash a T from opposite sides...
83bismuth38 wrote:yeah, like a glider and LWSS! maybe it would even move at a 12.5 angle!
I dont think this has a high chance of success - the LWSS is a pretty big ship for a "lightweight" title... it being a knightship is much less likely, considering that no knight-SMOS (Or even oblique) have been found.

A 4-glider SMOS (8c/68):

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 16, rule = B2ik3aijny4aey5ackr6cn8/S02ace3acjnr4aiwyz5jn6ak
5bo$3bobo$4b2o$bo$2bo$3o5$3o$2bo$bo$4b2o$3bobo$5bo!
Also about the scoring system, I suggest that the "wrong direction" should refer to orthogonal for orthogonal spaceships and diagonal for diagonal spaceships.

After review it seems I am wrong. The post I was thinking of was actually by Goldtiger997 and all the results were symmetrical. I think it reminded me of some tests I did with similar glider configurations which were asymmetric.

Anyway, here are some results using the small c/4 diagonal related to the Just Friends ship.

Nice high period ship.

The c/10 in the linked post inspired me to try another SMoSMoS search:

Rather than continuing on in the same vein I changed tack to try to find some examples in different orientations. That search is taking a lot longer to find something.

The c/2 and c/3 ships from AforAmpere's "five 3-cell ship" rule make good candidates for this idea.

As expected, no result after ~2*10^8 rules. This was in the standard configuration for diagonal ships at the minimum spacing, but not exhaustive due to use of random rule generator.

The asymmetry here does mean there's the potential for a knightship, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Here are 28 SMOSMOSs, found with a mixture of different rulesrc versions, based on a c/2 tship. It contains SMOSs, which then have all the SMOSMOSs that I found of that SMOSs indented below that SMOS. I am currently searching for more.

Some of theses may be viable for SMOSMOSMOS, but it is unlikely.

I haven't looked at them all, but the c/46 I think is a reasonable candidate - at least as good as any I've posted. It works in 2^28 rules and I ran an unsuccessful search with this pattern

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 21, rule = B2eik3-ajky4ijrw5c6c/S2ack3kqy4kt5ceir6ce7c
9bo10bo$10bo8bo$9bo10bo$12bo4bo$11bobo2bobo5$obo$bo$4bo$3bo$4bo3$4bo$
3bo$4bo$bo$obo!
for ~12*10^6 iterations. That's about 5% of the rulespace, so there's still some prospect of a successful result.

I'm now at the point where I don't know what to do with all the results I'm getting. I have about 2500 two glider SMoS, and another 1000 with the same c/2 T-ship as above. I honestly don't know how to find the most interesting or useful ones amongst them all, though there are some nice new speeds amongst them which I will try to filter out and post.

Why not just post all of them in a zip file or something?

After further consideration I'm less optimistic about this. It seems to me that a vast majority of them follow an evolutionary path resulting in either just two of the SMoS (as in the pattern above) or a single checker. There's possibly some benefit to constraining the search to include combinations of transitions which don't result in one of those two outcomes, but I don't think I'll bother for this one.

I'm not sure there's much interest in that though. But seeing as you asked, I'll try to compile a collection and post it later this week.

6c/109 SMOSMOS, made out of C/25 diagonal ships, made out of C/2's:

I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

That little c/2 sure is the basis for a lot of SMOSMOS. The 6c/89 works in 2^18 rules, which is on the low side to be optimistic. I ran a non-exhaustive search with the standard configuration which almost certainly tried all the rule combinations, but without success. The next most versatile ship is the 6c/180 which works in 2^17 rules.
