The rule B138/S has an interesting property:

So long as all live cells have the same parity of both their x and y coordinate--thus looking like a grid of dots--this will hold true at every even generation thereafter.

EDIT: It appears to be emulating a non-totalistic rule, too.

Seems like a smart idea, although you could also use these as placeholders until you get a non-extendable spaceship of that speed
