That is not a still life and even if it was, still lifes are not interesting. (Unless they have special properties.)

Oops, I had a single extra living cell. I will look into the properties of it, and if I find anything of interest I will post the correct RLE. Hopefully. Sorry for my ignorance/newbieness...

Hmm, well, it's a different mechanism from Bill Gosper's bi-gun from the 1970s (top pattern below). Your variant needs a couple more blocks:

Code: Select all

x = 67, y = 63, rule = b3/s23

I can't say for sure, but your bi-gun variant was probably also found by Gosper during the original twin-bees shuttle testing, but discarded because there was another one with smaller population.

It has probably been re-found every decade or so since then; Brice Due very likely ran into it during the run-up to constructing the OTCA metapixel, for example. He used gencols to check all orientations of all relative locations of twin-bees shuttles up to three shuttles, if I remember right, and found quite a number of interesting reactions. Here are a couple of samples:

The bottom-left p92 gun in that collection contains, as a proper subset, muzik's bi-gun variant.

There are several 5-glider syntheses of 15.78 from 3 gliders into a pi. B. Shemyakin also found this fast 4-glider synthesis at some point:

Is a synthesis possible here?

I came across this H-to-G9 that is a relatively simple combination of known tracks, but it is not in a collection I downloaded a while back, is this known?

I am trying to get some stable mechanisms to produce glider pairs that can be used to turn gliders, it there such a track already made? (among the combination below)

I don't know if any of those pairs can be made easily. What is your use-case exactly? Would codeholic's glider stream merger be sufficient?

Code: Select all

x = 140, y = 142, rule = B3/S23

Surprisingly this one that I posted I while ago works:

Code: Select all

@simeks Thanks you for sharing this solution.
chris_c wrote:What is your use-case exactly? Would codeholic's glider stream merger be sufficient?
I have been trying to make a gun for 30P5H2V0 (see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1643&start=125#p42642) This imply creating +- 70 gliders that converge onto a single point, so I wondered if the construction could be simplified if a fraction of the gliders could be produced by re-using the same tracks. The idea is that turning gliders allows to initiate gliders in different position depending on the phase shift between two glider streams (see below). Still, this might not be practical as it may collide with other gliders most of the time, but could be used a few times none the less.

Code: Select all

x = 208, y = 181, rule = LifeHistory

As long as there's a little space in front of the recipe -- i.e., it isn't one of those annoying cases where the salvo period is pushed so low that one recipe follows hard on the heels of the previous one -- then it seems as if this method will be usable in quite a large number of cases.

With that H-to-2G available, this insertion method is no more expensive than any of the other known "assisted edge shooters". And it can insert a glider only 15 ticks in front of another glider on the same lane, so it's just one tick away from the best it could be:

Do any of those other 2G+G collisions allow a 14-tick delta, either in front of or (not likely, I think) behind an existing glider on the same lane? (EDIT: a quick inspection says "no", and only a few of them even allow a follower as close as 15 ticks.)

It's a trivial exercise with the glider-pair adjustment toolkit to build a shotgun for any of those glider combinations, but simeks' direct H-to-2G converter is obviously going to win the prize for compactness!

Speaking of which, "someone" should maybe put together a modern no-glider-crossings version of the two shotguns required to do the universal clock-based insertion, since that's guaranteed to make any finite salvo buildable. Though of course in terms of sneaking gliders into continuous streams, it would have bigger problems than this new three-glider solution... If anyone wants assistance tackling this clock-inserter problem I'd be delighted to help in any way, because otherwise "someone" is probably going to end up being me.

I wonder if it's actually provably impossible to build a wide periodic stream of gliders, if it's guarded on the edges by something like a solidly packed lane of p14-separated gliders? There isn't any known way to fill the last gap in a p14 stream, working from just one side instead of the usual two sides... is there?

Hi!

There is a p448 gun that already exist in the variable section (see https://github.com/ceebo/glider_guns/tr ... r/variable); however, it is possible to lower it to a p440 gun by further compressing the pattern:

Code: Select all

it is not the smallest p440 gun, but up to 5 gliders with various phases can be produced every 440 generations.

Thanks for pointing it out. I would have checked it in as a p440 if I had found that weld, but seeing as it doesn't set any records I don't think I will change it now.
