A lightspeed ship, rake, or puffer in a cylindrical universe can be made simply by making a vertical line and moving around a few of the pixels.

I believe this is the smallest possible one:
x = 2, y = 2, rule = B3/S23:T0,2
o$2o!

other, larger ones can be made by moving pixels in a way that prevents symmetry.

Which version of Golly are you using? Which platform (eg. Windows)? What error messages are you getting? Can you run any scripts, or none at all? The more details you can provide the more likely I can give you a solution.

The R-pentomino is a "bottleneck" pattern with an incredible number of predecessors, small and large. The larger ones are common enough that I would think there'd have to be something else interesting about them to rate a mention on the LifeWiki page.

Your five-cell parent is certainly noteworthy, but also well-known -- that evolution into the R-pentomino occurs twice in a standard Herschel transceiver, for example, and at least once in most known Herschel circuits (i.e., all the ones that have the snake-and-transparent-block combination discovered by Dave Buckingham in July 1996, which tames an output B-heptomino by converting it to an R-pentomino).

I think it would be great to have that five-cell predecessor included in R-Pentomino // Predecessors, with maybe a reference link to "Conduit 1" / "Herschel conduit"... this whole area of the LifeWiki needs a lot of work, which I just haven't been able to find the time for yet. Things may open up a bit in the next year, though (knock on wood)!

I found this soup on one of my machines this morning. It runs for 20513 generations
and obviously doesn't break any records. What is interesting is that it is easy to
reduce it to two loaves, a beehive and the r-pentomino, then reduce the cell count
by replacing the still life with their predecessors for a total of nineteen cells.
The run length is then 20479.

By replacing the R-pentomino with a 2-generation predecessor and advancing the leftmost loaf predecessor by one generation, one can increase the lifespan and decrease the bounding box of the initial pattern with no detriment to the initial population:

I'm still hoping that the Soup Search will someday turn up a simple seed pattern, along lines similar to this constellation, that appears in its own output and is successfully re-triggered by a glider -- or some other active pattern, but a glider seems the most likely. The line of travel might be diagonal or orthogonal if the output is glide-symmetric, or oblique if it's a direct translation.

I am new to the idea of bounding box area otherwise I would have sought to minimize it.
I thought about using R-pentomino predecessors but decided that would be frivolous given the
