Not exactly, but some oscillators are able to be combined in ways such that the resulting new oscillator's period is less than the two oscillators' least common multiple. This occurs when the two interfere with one another and they end up in different phases than they would have been separately. This is one of the routes that is promising for creating new periods, but it's problematic in that most oscillators cannot be phase shifted, and even if they can, the combinations you can produce might not allow for the period you were hoping for.

There's been at least some efforts along these lines to try and find oscillators this way, but I'm not sure on the details of where the best set of unexplored territory is to do this; someone involved in those searches can probably explain the situation in more detail.

Also, about the p3 osc: It's unfortunate that the Wiki doesn't have any clear references to pattern collections that are useful for verifying if a discovery is new. Unfortunately, it is already known - it's contained in the o0003.lif file of the jslife pattern collection. The wiki itself has very few patterns with pages relative to how many patterns are actually known, so it's not very helpful in this regard.

Nice! It is usually a good idea to post oscillators in the phase with the smallest population, if possible. If you do that, you would see that #5 and #8 are the same. #5 and #8 are already known - the Bowed Caterer. #2 is also known, and is one of the three remaining 20-bit P3s without a known synthesis. I have never seen #3 before, so it's a new 21-bit P3 that I can add to the list. Congratulations! (Unfortunately, it also doesn't appear to have an obvious synthesis either). I haven't been tracking P3s larger than 21 bits, so I couldn't tell you if any of the larger ones has been seen before or not. If you find any other 21-bit ones (that aren't obvious stator variants of smaller ones, e.g. two eaters, candelfrobra, etc.), please post them!

download jslife, and look through the collection. if it's not there, then it might be worth posting. (I think jslife should be included with golly) Some might have improved stabilisation too.

The good news is, it is doable. Here is a 56-glider synthesis (the "add boat" step can probably be
improved). The bad news is that I misremembered. This USED to be one of the 5 remaining ones that had no syntheses, but Extrementhusiast created a 25-glider synthesis for it on 2015-08-06, and I found a 1-glider improvement on 2016-11-09.

We see these large P3s, p4s, and p5s all over the place, but I always assumed that they indeed had to be that big. But now there are better options. The glider-friendly emulator variants still look tricky to construct at first glance, simply because the emulator's own spark gets in the way of the attachment. So the attachments might have to be synthesized at the same time as the emulator...hmm. Tanner Jacobi Coldlander, a novel, available in paperback and as an ebook. I also assumed that they are optimized out till the last cell, but no, there are some low-hanging roughly optimized fruits there in the collection. I was surprised to find out that some of the harder-looking ones had a lot of room for optimization, and the easy-looking ones were quite hard and needed bulky stabilizations. You never know until you actually do a search... I think ofind is quite a useful tool for optimizing known oscillators, as it prints out the shortest oscillator if it exists. (But typically a search can only be vertical, so the search space is limited.) I was thinking about making the emulator first, and then synthesize some junk that "evolves" into the p4 part "with the help of" the domino spark of the HW emulator. But I haven't looked into glider syntheses before, so... yeah. The emulator's spark does allow for the activation of some key cells here, though I would normally try to reduce the active part of the oscillator to something that looks easier to build: Code: Select all x = 48, y = 39, rule = LifeHistory 13.2A$13.3A$12.A.A$12.ABA$12.2B$11.ABA$11.2A$11.A$10.BAB$9.3AB26.2A$8.2D28.2D$7.A.A27.2A$2.2A.A4BA.2A18.2A.A3B.A.2A$2.A2.6B2.A18.A2.5B3.A

The issue for me is that the spark is in the way and I can't tell it to hold its horses until necessary, and it would be helpful if I could put a lot of baits and such where I need to build that tilted totem pole of cells. Aha, I see... I guess we would have to wait a little to see p4 bumpers constructed... (That seemed to be what dvgrn was hoping for...)

Here's a less clear but smaller p7 pipsquirter.

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

Is it one of those oscs that combines two different stabilizations to showcase both of them?

Whoops, yeah! So another not very meaningful optimization, but still, it's better than nothing!
