It will be an even more significant number of periods if you include this trivial variant p564+8N. Due to a fairly insignificant bounding box improvement, it can probably replace most of the p00556_Ns in the present collection:

Thanks. It's a shame that a nice gun with period 7 modulo 8 is still elusive.

Thanks. It also suggests a significant number of tentative guns that I am too lazy to confirm.
dvgrn wrote:Just one Snark->bumper replacement got me a new smaller p385, though:
That also improves p85 and p425. Also you can get a better p369 using a p9 bumper.

Well, it's possible that we're getting kind of spoiled by all this new technology. Something like the following would have been considered a marvel of compactness half a decade ago. And it can be started up with an input glider from either the southwest or the northeast, if that's any use:

Code: Select all

I lost some sleep the other night, being convinced that something 7 modulo 8 was hiding in the latest H-to-G collection.

Eventually I concluded that two syringes, plus any two H-to-Gs with the same parity output lane (both even or both odd) and a combined T rating of 1 modulo 8, could always be hooked together to get 7 modulo 8, with enough Snarks. EDIT: Well, not quite that simple. If one of the output lanes has to be turned 180 degrees by two Snarks, then the H-to-Gs should have opposite lane parities... and I think that two H-to-Gs with odd lane parities would need combined T values of 5 mod 8 instead of 1, because the glider effectively ends up traveling a half-lane farther.

A fresh look today turned up the above loop, which I think is just barely too large to improve anything. Seems like there are a lot of combinations I could have missed, though.

Thanks! It sets 7 new records and brings the average down to 4973:

Code: Select all

691 (5310, 'p00691_0')
707 (5520, 'p00691_2')

Nice. It actually improves quite a few others: all the way from p897 to p981 in steps of 12.

Here is a nice fixed gun of period 353. It uses a variant of Bx106 from gmc_nxtman's H->H collection. If the right kind of NE or SE H->G was available it might be possible to get a new record breaking family of guns in the 400-500 range...

The p519 gun is looking increasingly annoying at the top of the Hall of Shame (size 7888 vs. 7688 for the second worst).

All it would take for a p519 of size 7396 is a period tripler that fits in the red area. Surely that must be possible?

We are not restricted to p1. Maybe a p3 one with a smaller size exists.

If I build some of the tentative guns over lunch hour today, would that be useful, or would it just duplicate effort? Most of the tentative guns are in just half a dozen families:

Code: Select all

141 (4602, 'p00564_0')
286 (4661, 'p00564_1')
145 (4720, 'p00564_2')
290 (4720, 'p00564_2')
294 (4779, 'p00564_3')
149 (4838, 'p00564_4')
298 (4838, 'p00564_4')
151 (4897, 'p00564_5')
302 (4897, 'p00564_5')
310 (5015, 'p00564_7')
157 (5074, 'p00564_8')
314 (5074, 'p00564_8')
318 (5133, 'p00564_9')
163 (5340, 'p00564_11')
326 (5340, 'p00564_11')

259 (4130, 'p00518osc7_0')
275 (4307, 'p00550osc5_0')
279 (4425, 'p00558osc9_0')
287 (4543, 'p00518osc7_7')
295 (4602, 'p00550osc5_5')
315 (4897, 'p00550osc5_10')
335 (5192, 'p00550osc5_15')

334 (5487, 'p00652b_2')
173 (5664, 'p00652b_5')
338 (5546, 'p00652b_3')
346 (5664, 'p00652b_5')
181 (5900, 'p00652b_9')
362 (5900, 'p00652b_9')
370 (6120, 'p00652b_11')

343 (5394, 'p00686_0')
347 (5452, 'p00686_1')
355 (5568, 'p00686_3')
359 (5626, 'p00686_4')

367 (5427, 'p00726_1')
383 (5695, 'p00726_5')
391 (5829, 'p00726_7')
415 (6510, 'p00726_13')
Also, does it maybe make sense to remove old out-of-date guns from the "fixed" collection -- or possibly overwrite each one with the current best adjusted variable gun? I know that's a lot of work, but I'm thinking again about how some of the gun-building might be done semi-automatically.

Currently it seems a little too easy for people to get confused and think they have an improved gun, because they're comparing against a fixed gun instead of what's in the README.

EDIT: the tentative p159 (4988, 'p00445_4') doesn't work -- the H-to-G component at the top appears to have a minimum recovery time of 202. The other loner from the tentative list, p378, works just fine:

glider_guns/variable/p00684osc6.rle is actually a p384 gun as it's currently checked in -- just remove the glider on the left side to get the actual p684 gun. The other related tentative gun in that group is 354 (5225, 'p00684osc6_3'), and it also works fine and has the correct bounding box:

I've updated the above list accordingly -- 37 tentative guns to go.

EDIT2: I remember someone (chris_c?) posting either a multistate rule, or a script, that would do something along these lines:

-- change the selection to a special "marked" state;
-- evolve only marked cells; or
-- evolve only unmarked cells;
-- change the selection back to a standard ON state.

Was I just imagining that? Now that I want to try it out, I can't find any sign of such a thing. I can throw something like that together easily enough... would like to add another script, a shift.py variant that works only on marked cells instead of on the selection.

dvgrn wrote:If I build some of the tentative guns over lunch hour today, would that be useful, or would it just duplicate effort?
Yes I think this would be useful. I haven't done any of that work thus far.
dvgrn wrote: Also, does it maybe make sense to remove old out-of-date guns from the "fixed" collection -- or possibly overwrite each one with the current best adjusted variable gun? I know that's a lot of work, but I'm thinking again about how some of the gun-building might be done semi-automatically.

Currently it seems a little too easy for people to get confused and think they have an improved gun, because they're comparing against a fixed gun instead of what's in the README.
Probably easiest would be to add "#C Obsoleted by p000xyz_d" to any fixed gun that is not a record breaker. Other alternatives I can think of are probably more difficult.

EDIT: On second thoughts you are right... why not just delete fixed guns that are not record breakers.

Yeah that's a bit of a silly case. I only set tentative_compression = 78 in that family because of possibilities such as the following p151 gun:

It is the current record holder for p151 (but looks like it should lose out to the tentative gun p00564_5). The same method doesn't work at p159 but I hoped that something similar could be discovered instead. Now that the p564 family exists I imagine that the best p159 will probably come from p564_9 and I doubt any magical variation of p445_4 can be made to beat it.

Thanks. I will fix it.

Yes I posted something like that in the Dart gun thread. I think there is a shift.py variant in there that works as you describe.

Sounds good to me. I'd like to try to get an actual old-fashioned ZIP file eventually, with RLE for every gun from 14 to 999... and an online version of the same, maybe in the Confirmed folder? But I'm not in any particular hurry.

Attached is a ZIP file with the first couple of tentative families instantiated, including the two quoted in my last post.
tentative_no_more_part1.zip
17 guns from the tentative list, mostly p00564_N
(13.97 KiB) Downloaded 278 times
EDIT: I see on looking at the Confirmed folder that the naming convention is a little different than I thought. I've added a second ZIP file, just the same as the first except with names corrected to match the Confirmed folder.
tentative_no_more_part1_names_corrected.zip
Same 17 guns as other attachment, but in Confirmed-folder name format instead of Jason Summers gun collection format
(14.29 KiB) Downloaded 289 times

The rest of the tentative guns are attached. The success rate was fairly good:
guns_with_tentativeness_removed_part_2.zip
19 more working guns from the tentative list
(17.14 KiB) Downloaded 271 times
The only problems were with

335 (5192, 'p00550osc5_15') (actual size had to be 5280, but that's still a new record);
367 (5427, 'p00726_1') (unavoidable signal collision);
383 (5695, 'p00726_5') (actual size would be 6120, which does not improve on the existing gun)
391 (5829, 'p00726_7') (would be bigger than the p383, so also not an improvement).

The only gun in the p726+8N family where the signal collision wasn't a problem was the last one, 415 (6510, 'p00726_13').

Once I confirmed that p00726_1_p00367 was non-viable a new tentative suggestion appeared: p00686_6_p00367. I added that and now the Tentative list is empty.

Sounds good!

So what's next? For example, would it be helpful to make a list of non-recordbreaking guns to delete from the fixed collection, or is that already trivial with the tools you've put together?

That was quite easy to do. As of now the 'fixed' directory has only 217 files.

Leaving this as a placeholder -- the Hall of the Insane p17 still looks too big compared to the p34, somehow. I haven't quite proved yet that it's suboptimal, but there's a promising amount of free space in the corners of this:

The current p17 is 256 by 212, so it's going to be pretty close -- maybe it's optimistic to think that there are forty-odd rows that can be freed up at the top. But it looks like the middle input in the sets of three inputs in the NE and SW could be replaced by a glider stream bounced in from the corners by Snarks -- should be quite a bit narrower.

I'd also like to try chaining glider splitters for the sets of three inputs, instead of having each input cost a whole gun. Anyone have a collection of smallest syringe-based splitters organized by relative timings somehow? Seems like that might come in handy. (As a start, I'm working on fixing up the H-to-G collection -- have posted an annual October update.)

Ah, good point. Going for p102 might be a winner but it should be noted that a smaller p85 gun has been discovered since I last worked on the p17:
