okay i will do thad... you have to know i am new here... i installed the golly Client... changed nothing and produced my pattern... now i will test my pattern in other GOL Clients to go shure it runs under the standart rules...

greetings... ^^

haha... i solved the Problem with your thinking my System does not run under the Standard rules... i think this is because of the game-speed... i switched the gaming speed a few times... so the single following Frames of the Vídeo made you think thad the objects does not follow the standart rules... but this isnt my Problem... i ran the income pattern in a nother Client without any rules Change... and it does exactly the same...

Can you please copy picstar (or a section of it, since you probably don't want to reveal the full pattern) out of golly, and paste the result into a post here so we can see what rule it is?

hey guys, i must apologize for my occurs.
picstar is not able to run under b3/s23, it only runs only b3/s23-a4ei6. :cry:

can someone please tell me the difference between b3/s23 and b3/s23-a4ei6
although I am an unfriendly challenger with bad manners?

b3/s23-a4ei6 seems to be the standard configuration from the "golly"-client.

greetings :)

b3/s23 a4ei6 has a few more rules than the standard CGoL, making every patterns radically different. Other members can explain this more precisely than I do, but as a rule of thumb, the number of valid rules for a pattern gets very rapidly limited as the number of cells rise, and almost every patterns with more than 50 cells work only in b3/s23.

Your patterns is made from replicators not unlike B-heptominoes. in traditional life, the heptomino is a very common short-lived methusaleh, which moves, yes, but for a short time before stopping and stabilizing into 3 blocks and a ship.

As of a non-standard life being the "default rule" may be a bug, as the default rule is very definitely CGoL. Did you modify something in the files?
This is game of life, this is game of life!

There is nothing wrong with your manners. In fact David was being unnecessarily rude, not you.

triller's answer is great, but to simplify a bit, the biggest "difference" between b3/s23 and b3/s23-a4ei6 (besides the fact that the latter has more transitions, which is a pretty big difference in itself) is (a) that the glider only works in the first rule, b3/s23, and (b) the replicator - i.e. the growing triangle shape that makes picstar 'beautiful' - only works in the second rule.

And golly's standard/default configuration is definitely b3/s23 (Life), but if you run a pattern in b3/s23-a4ei6 and don't change it back to b3/s23, it'll stay on b3/s23-a4ei6.

3c/14 is a pretty weirdly common speed. There's a pi wave that travels at that speed diagonally, pulsars replicate at that speed, and this block moved at that speed:

Code: Select all

x = 1887, y = 1884, rule = B3/S23

You can get that block to move at quite a few possible speeds in that general neighborhood -- it's only likely to have a 3 in it because the block moves three steps diagonally per two gliders. I don't think that really adds much to the weirdly-common count...! And pulsars move at 3c/15, don't they? -- as in the p15 pre-pulsar spaceship. And that's orthogonally not diagonally, so that would be the start of a different count anyway.

The lack of a spaceship seems not too surprising at all, considering that period 14 spaceships
are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 13 spaceships,
which are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 12 spaceships,
which are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 11 spaceships,
which are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 10 spaceships,
which are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 9 spaceships,
which are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 8 spaceships,
which are maybe a thousand times harder to find than period 7 spaceships,
which are currently (spaghetti monster) taking maybe a month of CPU time to run a successful search.

[I'm practicing saying this in different ways, to see if one way helps build intuition better than another. Apologies if you've heard it all before.]

"A thousand" may be a serious underestimate, but it wouldn't really matter if it were an overestimate. And it's perfectly possible that there may happen to be very tiny spaceships for some of those speeds, but it doesn't change the general pattern.

The Exponential Wall
If there's no lucky tiny spaceship, then the number of unknown bits to be searched goes up linearly, so the size of the search problem goes up exponentially... roughly speaking. To us CPU-limited humans, an exponential curve like this looks like a wall at any given time -- and the only effect of Moore's Law (a much gentler exponential curve than my hypothesized factor of a thousand) is to gradually move where the wall is.

Right now the wall seems to be around period 8. Most likely we could already move the wall beyond period 8 by setting a high-performance computing cluster to work on a c/8 or 3c/8 search or whatever, for a month or two, or otherwise setting up a distributed computing project. But then N*c/9 would still look just as hard to reach as N*c/8 does now. This has serious implications for N*c/10, let alone N*c/14.

Wild Random Speculations
As soon as a lucky 3c/14 spaceship pops up, with some handy sparks or a nice little sparky tagalong, then suddenly the odds get much better of adding in support for known waves that travel at the same speed, just the same as happened with the spaghetti monster spaceship.

But it's hard to argue that the existence of the pi-wave makes the hypothetical existence of a tiny spaceship any more likely. To support the same speed in a limited area, it will probably need a completely unrelated mechanism for movement.

Indeed they can travel at a lot of speeds, here's the partial I was referring to:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

Took too much time to find than what it's worth. Anyone know any boat pulling reactions that could be fired by a gun?

While this might be true for c/14, 3c/14, and 5c/14 ships, it's not true for c/7 and 3c/7 ships with glide symmetry. Those should take about as much time to search for as period 7 ships.

Due to problems with Golly and iOS 10 I'll have to type out RLEs manually from now on, which is kind of a relief for you guys since I won't post as much.

Anyway, you can fast forward an R-pentomino two generations with a domino spark:

Code: Select all

..*..
..***
*..*.
*....

Most of a component:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
2o$obo$2bo3bobo$2b2o2b2o$7bo5b2o$2b2o8bo$bobo8bo2bo$2bo4b2o3bo$7bobo3b
2o$4bo3bo$4b2o10bo$3bobo9b2o$8bo6bobo$7b2o$7bobo!
The glider at lower right is just cleanup. Not sure if this is at all helpful. I doubt it's known, though.

That's two copies of the Filament rotor, in the casing used in 24P2.994 seen here:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

For your double filament, here's a smaller stator.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 15, rule = B3/S23

24-cell p4 billiard table, from an Oct. 13 soup:

Hey, I remember this oscillator back from when we were trying to synthesize it (or maybe just a similar one)
What's the soup?

1. Hmm, I would be a little surprised if that isn't in jslife!
2. I've seen the dimerized form of a similar oscillator now and then... (the one hassled by an eater, IIRC)

1. I tried double-checking to see whether it was in there, but haven't found it. But maybe I missed it--hence why I used the unsure thread.
2. There seem to be a lot of similar ones though with slightly different rotors.

Even more weirdly, the second oscillator is in jslife, but nothing that matches the 24-cell one, despite the second one being a version with a bigger rotor.

Huh! Neither could I! And I am quite surprised!
By the way, the similar osc I was referring to was this:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

Looking through a synthesis and realized that three gliders could be trimmed off this component:

Code: Select all

x = 59, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
27bo29bo$26bo29bo$26b3o27b3o2$15b2o28b2o$15bobo27bobo$16bo3b2o24bo3b2o
$6bo6b3o5bo14bo6b3o5bo$7b2o4bo4b3o16b2o4bo4b3o$6b2o10bo17b2o10bo$15bo
29bo$14bobo27bobo$14bobo27bobo$15bo29bo5$3o$2bo12b2o20b2o$bo4b2o6b2o
22b2o$7b2o7bo20bo$6bo3b3o$10bo$11bo!
EDIT: Which means the component can easily be compacted to a single step in some cases:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
9b2o6bobo$9bobo5b2o$10bo7bo$o6b3o$b2o4bo5bo6bo$2o10bo7bobo$12b3o5b2o2$
9b3o7bo$9bo8b2o$10bo7bobo5$b2o$2b2o$bo!
