Yes, it makes an exact copy of itself with buffer space around, but that first copy doesn't live long enough without stabilisation (such as a block train) so doesn't quite qualify.

Any other small grandfather pattern like switch engine or queen bee with finite life?

My reason is I'm writing some code to detect natural transients like switch engine and queen bee from a random start, and want to know if I should be looking for anything else at the same time.

Possibly the next most likely formation is the pair of B-hptominoes which form the frontend of the pufferfish which is at least semi-natural, i.e. occurs in symmetric soups.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

That reminds me: twin bee.

What is the smallest 1-cell-thick pattern that emits a non-glider spaceship?

See this.
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

Right then... any non-standard spaceship emitters?

Good question. It turns out that I never ventured into the wilderness of 40-bit 1-cell thick patterns. :?

One pattern on the aforementioned Infinite Growth blog post emits a MWSS on MWSS 1, instead of two MWSSes (as it was listed to produce):

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 1, rule = B3/S23

Is there a name for SS linear growth (such as bricklayer), and can we invent one?

I think "stretcher" is as close as we have at the moment, and that may not be very close. Jason Summers used "pseudo-stretcher" sometimes for things that sent gliders out to add to the far end of growing pattern -- e.g.,

Code: Select all

#C c/124 pseudo-snake-stretcher

Sening gliders out to add to the far end of growing pattern is more or less what the bricklayer pattern does -- with the minor difference is that the bricklayer's "far end" is an active pattern that requires continuous support, where the pseudo-snake-stretcher's slide guns are aimed at something stable, so you could pause the stretching process with no ill effects.

The problem with "stretcher" is that the current Life Lexicon definition says that the thing being stretched has to be a wick or agar... which in the case of the bricklayer, it's not.

-- As far as I know, anyway. Who knows, there might be a way to ignite that double line of blocks after all. A search along the lines of codeholic's search for the pufferfish tagalong might well turn something up.

Seems a little arbitrary that a pattern can be called a stretcher as soon as its line of stuff can be shown to burn like a fuse. I'd rather extend the definition slightly to allow stretching any repeating pattern, so as to be able to say that Life/Signal-Circuitry/constructor-memory-loop.rle is "a stretcher for an oblique line of eaters", for example.

This page says that
Hickerson then found a grammar for creating arbitrarily large period 2 spaceships.
Where can I see the grammar?

David Bell's article, Spaceships in Conway's Life (Part 2), which is available on his homepage.

Keep in mind that these grammars aren't really used anymore, because it is now relatively easy to find any desired extension of a p2 ship with tools like WLS and JLS.

In order, they are the cis, ortho, para, and trans carrier and table.

I found two of the four names, the ones with trans- and para-, on Catagolue (with "aircraft" in place of "carrier"; I changed this in my Catalogue Backup name list to make them more consistent with other names). It seems that these were from one of Achim's censuses. I don't think I saw the other two names anywhere before I put the name in my Catagolue backup, but they seemed like the logical continuation because ortho- and cis- often act like the opposites of para- and trans-.

Anyway, it doesn't matter where the names came from because now we have a nomenclature for a specific type of still life family with four isomers. Furthermore, "up" and "down" can be added to the names to cover eight isomers if the inductor is asymmetric.

Is there such thing as a shipstretcher? As in a boatstretcher except the end being extended looks like the end of a ship in at least one generation.

We could make one. Maybe not a very satisfactory one -- I don't know if there's a reasonable reaction that will extend the end in a single step. But just look at Golly's Patterns/Miscellaneous/tubstretch-c124b.rle, and imagine adding a lot more slide guns to
  • - add a bit to the end of the long^N barge being stretched;
    - remove it again
If you don't want to count slidegun-shipstretchers, well, it's probably technically possible to do something similar with rakes, though maybe it would take a big pile of high-period low-velocity rakes or something -- I'm not sure how fast the extra bit-twiddling gliders could be packed together.

So I guess the answer is "There definitely _could_ be, but there ain't at the moment."

Two ideas that could be developed into a ship stretcher:

Could we engineer a spaceship to move at the same speed a human hair grows (assuming CGoL's c is also the real-life speed of light) and still have it run fairly fast in Golly?

Why is the neighbourhood of the central cell in the r-pentomino 4j and not 4r? It's a bit of a shame really...

Sure, that shouldn't be a problem with current Life technology. At least, we can make something that will run quickly in Golly once the hash tables are populated. It might take a while to get it warmed up, but then Golly could "run away" with it, simulating it pretty much as fast as you want to go, at negligible extra cost.

One likely candidate would be a rebuilt Demonoid or an Orthogonoid, with a speed that's a negative power of two -- let's say (2^-56)c, since that's more or less the rate of hair growth as a fraction of the speed of light. It's better if the step size is also a power of two.

Any factor other than 2^N in the step size or period will multiply the number of hashtiles needed by that factor. At a period around 2^56, you're bound to run out of memory and have to start garbage-collecting -- unless the period is exactly 2^56, in which case Golly knows the entire future history of the pattern as soon as it has calculated one cycle.

We can't get to (2^-56)c by adjusting an existing Demonoid, because the replicator units' 180-degree reflector doesn't have the right phasing mod 8. So a complete rebuild would be needed there, including new self-destruct circuitry.

However, the most recently posted Orthogonoid design could be set up to run at human-hair-growth speed, simply by moving the replicator units far enough apart.

Somebody just has to add the MWSSes to program the existing circuitry to construct a copy of itself and its construction elbow at (0,-256), and shoot down the copy behind it. Once that's done, it's all set to travel at any speed you want!

Now, another question: adapting big spaceships to work reasonably well in Golly.

On my iPad (and probably my computer as well), engineered and engineerable spaceships are pretty slow. Almost ironically, the waterbear is the only ship that can run at really fast speeds!

ParaHBK runs well on lower speeds, but when the gliders go down the middle there's a lot of lag, and changing the step value just makes it slower and more jittery. Similar goes for Demonoids and Gemini. Caterloopillars are kind of fast, but lag a bit. Caterpillar and Centipede run super slow.

So why exactly is the waterbear so fast?

It's much smaller, and has a lower period even than the centipede, let alone the other megaships. That's pretty much all there is to it.

None of the spaceships you mentioned take advantage of Golly's ability to speed up power-of-two spatial and temporal offsets -- and that HashLife trick only works for powers of two. However the waterbear is small enough that all sizes of hashtiles for all of its phases will fit into a reasonable amount of memory -- so the HashLife algorithm doesn't have to do any garbage collection.

(Garbage collection is when Golly throws away tiles that it saw a moment ago and maybe is about to see again, but that aren't being used right now. If the tile isn't part of the current generation of the pattern, and Golly's memory gets filled up, then it throws away whatever it has to, to save space. That's a time-consuming process, and it's what causes the every-now-and-then jitters in HashLife.)

That said, how about lowering the caterpillar period (or at least the period of its successor)?

A p45 caterpillar is impossible unless we can efficiently make a helix of c/3 ships, which is unlikely. p90 isn't looking to be too good either, since 90 idn't a multiple of 4. So how about a p180 caterpillar?
