Almost certainly useless, unless a pattern that requires a sacrificial bi-pond is found.
True, but the traffic lights could also be a bit of a problem. Messing a bit with the bi-pond, I found how an R-pentomino cleanly destroys it, but, again, unless this could form part of a circuit (i.e. the R-pentomino do something if the bi-pond is not there, which most probably isn't the case)... interesting at best. I'll have a look in case gliders can be used, to control a glider stream with a Herschel circuit (and this circuit).

And sort of on topic, LoM+r-pentomino gives two biponds

EDIT: one of my best attempts with a glider, but requires block and puts a beehive that, on top of that, would react violently if the next glider comes in the same direction... not too useful:

The interaction of a c10 p192 lwss backrake with a C2 P24 lwss backrake in combination with two p24 rakes brings a nice selfsimilar effect.

No, because the reaction is not chainable.

On the android ap "The game of life" there is a beautiful Methuselah called "coeur" by "Joshua". I don't see it on lifewiki. Is it a variant of some other Methuselah?

It's symmetric, fits in a 7*5 bounding box, is connected, and contains 15 cells.
I don't know how many steps it runs for, but it produces 18 gliders. Partway through the run there are a transitory pair of spaceships.

Welcome to the forums!
No, it's not a variant of any other methuselahs. If you want to know more about methuselahs, you can refer to the handy list on the LifeWiki.
"Couer" stabilizes in precisely 5576 generations.
It's rather close in size to 23334M, which has one more column but 3 less cells, and lasts for - you guessed it - 23334 generations, more than 4 times as long.
In general, non-record methuselahs aren't particularly "interesting" (which makes this thread one of the better places to have them).
That was kind of rude, FlameAndFury.
LifeWiki: Like Wikipedia but with more spaceships. [citation needed]

It's symmetric, fits in a 7*5 bounding box, is connected, and contains 15 cells.
I don't know how many steps it runs for, but it produces 18 gliders. Partway through the run there are a transitory pair of spaceships.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

Possible record for a symmetric Methuselah ?

I wouldn't know. Asymmetry tends to allow reactions to go on longer, so that's why most of the searches have used asymmetric soups to find methuselahs.
If you want to talk about records, you'd have to play the same game as the rest of us and try to find a reasonable definition of methuselah. Otherwise, I could just put 40514M and its mirror image just far enough away that they still interact and break that record easily.

...possible record for a polyomino? Maybe. Again, I'm not the one to ask.
LifeWiki: Like Wikipedia but with more spaceships. [citation needed]

To find out, write a script that generates all symmetrical patterns, or all symmetrical polyominoes, that fit inside 5x7, and runs them all to see when they stabilize, and keeps track of the longest-running one.

Takes all the fun out of guessing, I know... but it actually wouldn't take very long to run that exhaustive search. I would guess that there's something in that space that lasts longer than 5776 ticks.

However, this seems like a rather strange artificially restricted search space, so I'm not likely to be curious enough about that particular record to write the script myself.

Well, since I already pretty much had the code to try this...

Turns out that pattern is in fact the longest running methuselah with bounding box 5×7 and symmetry on that axis.

This is the form with lowest population (11 cells, 5574 gens):

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
2.A.A$.A3.A$.2A.2A$A5.A$3.A!
This is the second best one (19 cells, 5012 gens)::

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
7A$2A.A.2A$2.3A$A5.A$.A3.A!

Sorry ._. It doesn't break any big records, but the definition of methuselahs are very arbitrary.

A new spaceship in Live Free Or Die:

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-48,-4 Gen=48
x = 9, y = 6, rule = B2/S0
3bo4bo$2bob2o$o$o$2bob2o$3bo4bo!
Note: This may seem oddly similar to the free ship: http://lfod.wikispaces.com/free+ship but at no generation is it equal to the free ship.

Also, for the record, it's unfortunately not new -

The generation you posted is the the exact same as the image in the LFOD wiki.

For future reference, you can search all known gliders/spaceships in a rule using David Eppstein's glider database; the free ship is referred to as Glider 7171 in LFOD's list.

The mess when a glider collides with a blinker (only in some cases) make more gliders, and those gliders can hit more blinkers, and the gliders created by those collisions can hit even more blinkers, and you pretty much end up with a methuselah of over one billion generations. However, why is this method for finding methuselahs extremely difficult? ( Apparently the most recent methuselah found using this method is 40514M, stimulated with only gliders and blinkers. I can't find any other.)

As a newbie three further questions.
1. Worthwhile putting on lifewiki or not?
2. How to understand 2.A.A$.A3.A$.2A.2A$A5.A$3.A!
3. Want fast software to run life, access to source code and must have automatic backgrounding of period 2 oscillators. Prefer Fortran but can live with C.

1. As methuselahs are very easy to find and create, I would think probably not.
3. Golly is probably the best choice currently available for multiple platforms. It doesn't treat P2 oscillators specially, but it doesn't need to; with its QuickLife algorithm, there is zero performance difference between still-lifes and P2 oscillators. If you run with a step increment that is even, you will not see them move either.
2. This is RLE code, that is the de-facto standard text interchange format for Life patterns. RLE files consist of any number of comment lines beginning with '#', a header line, and a stream of data runs ending with '!'. Each run consists of an optional repeat count (default=1) followed by a character that indicates what kind of run. For normal RLE files, these are 'b' for blank (dead) cells, 'o' for living cells, and '$' for newlines; any unrecognized symbols should be treated as alive for compatibility purposes. Spaces and newlines are ignored, but lines should not exceed 70 characters for compatibility with old email programs. Golly supports custom rule fileS (e.g. in this case, LifeHistory), in which case '.' means dead cell, 'A' means living cell of state #1, 'B' of state #2, etc. So the above pattern would look like:

Code: Select all

..O.O
.O...O
.OO.OO
O.....O
...O

A reaction posted here earlier by fsrm:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
o2b2o$2b3o$o2b2o!
Are there any p7 or p14 oscillators that can put that two-dot spark there?
