there may be bugs in gfind

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 13, rule = B3/S23

I didn't believe this was real until I played the pattern in Golly... :o :o :o

This is great, so tiny! (Minimum population 28)

What should it be called?

Now this is the find of the year. At least so far!

Congratulations!!!!

HOLY SHxT

I suggest naming this the copperhead, after the snake. I'll create the wiki page under this name unless someone wants to change it.

Also, this is the slowest orthogonal spaceship discovered so far.

What are now the next steps?

- Use gencols to rub the ship against gliders and *WSSs to see whether there is a useful collision to maybe build a puffer.

- The ship looks as if it might be glider constructible as well.

- Find small tagalongs

Was considering doing this.

The block is being pulled along by the ship, so maybe we could attach something to that

Wow, how did you find it? This is the second loafer!

Or blocker, because it involves a block instead of a loaf?

I wonder how long until this shows up on Catagolue (probably in some symmetry)?

I would say it resembles the weekender more (even-symmetric, absurdly high period for its discovery date).

Most likely a symmetry that's left/right (I have no idea what the codenames are).

The ship also works in drylife.

Can someone find a synthesis for this?

I think the best choice would be D2_+2

Also nice job zdr!

While running the pattern, I checked totally three times whether I am running in B3/S23.
Great job, zdr! Pattern of the year!
Still drifting.

1970s: Sigh... I'm pretty sure that c/2 and c/4 are the speeds we'll be sticking with.

21st century: 2C/7 ORTHOGONAL! C/6 DIAGONAL! C/6 ORTHOGONAL! C/7 DIAGONAL! C/7 ORTHOGONAL! 17C/45 ORTHOGONAL! 31C/240 ORTHOGONAL! 6,3C/2621440 OBLIQUE! C/10 ORTHOGONAL! New high score!

The block though... I feel like that's the secret to the tagalong

Fantastic! Congratulations Zdr! Please tell us the story of how you found it!

Hartmut said " Use gencols to rub the ship against gliders and *WSSs to see whether there is a useful collision to maybe build a puffer."

Could you elaborate? What are the characteristics of a helpful collision?

Here's an MWSS hitting the c/10 to result in the c/10, a block, and a glider:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 40, rule = B3/S23

And here's some noodling around with a LWSS128 gun:

Code: Select all

x = 526, y = 202, rule = B3/S23

Re: is this c/10 spaceship known?

Post by dvgrn » March 5th, 2016, 1:34 pm

Congratulations, @zdr! New spaceship speeds don't come along every day, or even every year -- and most new speeds need a big awkward construction, not a tiny new Life form that fits inside a 6x12 bounding box. I bet a glider synthesis for the new c/10 will come along pretty quick.

I wonder if there are any c/9 or c/8 ships with the same block movement mechanism at the back? Or c/11 and up, for that matter.

Or blocker, because it involves a block instead of a loaf?
Sadly, blocker is a name for a well-known p8 oscillator -- no hope of reassigning it to this spaceship. And "block puller" also kind of means something else.

"Blockhauler" might work, or something more abstract that gives a hint that it's even slower than a loafer. Or... how about "decapod", or some other reference to the new c/10 speed?

... It might be a little premature to have "copperhead" on the wiki already, before hearing back from the discoverer. But it's easy enough to change it if necessary.

EDIT: @EricG, have a look at the weekender distaff for example -- codeholic found interactions that were "helpful" enough to build a high-period 2c/7 puffer or rake, even though the weekender's sparks are pretty weak. Nobody has done the same with c/7 yet, because loafers don't survive much of any interaction with anything -- you'd probably have to find a c/7 tagalong or some completely different ship that has usable sparks.

This new c/10 looks a lot more promising than a loafer, anyway.

"decapod"
Decapodiformes is a superorder of molluscs that includes squid and cuttlefish, those could be good names.

The ship kind of reminds me of a snail, but we also can't name it snail because it's also the name of a spaceship which also resembles a snail. However, snail moves at c/5, so maybe something involving words related to 2 and snail could make up the name?

Anyway, pentadecathlon.com needs an update for this.

I think it looks like a cuttlefish.

It looks like an upside down face.

A final step for a synthesis, minus cleanup:

Code: Select all

x = 38, y = 46, rule = B3/S23

9bobo14bobo$11bo14bo!
I'm sure there are much better solutions.
Edit: For naming, I vote "Cuttlefish".

Wow. A small c/10 orthogonal. If you couldn't tell, zdr, that's a big deal. Ships of new speeds are an achievement, especially ones that tiny.

My synthesis attempt, booted inefficiently out the door to beat Martin Grant to the punch:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 21, rule = B3/S23

Congratulations to zdr! I'm jealous...

@HartmutHolzwart Since c/10 is less than c/4, even an appropriate glider collision might be sufficient (though it's unlikely that such a collision exists).
