If one adds two blocks to a known method of constructing a unix, it forms a large 26-bit still life:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
5b2o$5b2o2b2o$9b2o2$5b2o$2o2bo2bo$2o2bo2bo$5b2o2b3o$8bo3bo$b2o4bo5bo$b
2o4bo5bo$7bo5bo$8bo3bo$9b3o!
However, there is another natural reaction that produces this object:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
15bo$14bo$14b3o3$b2o$o2bo$bobo$2bo4$b2o$bo7b2o$bo2bo3bo2bo$2b3o4bobo$

It seems obvious in retrospect, but I don't anyone ever actually having done it. It takes 8 gliders, which is better than 12 from the natural method. It can also be done with many other inducting still-lifes (e.g. pond, but nothing that protrudes farther than that).

By building the unix starting with the long barge, rather than the blocks, this takes 11 gliders, but adds the flexibility that the inducting still-lifes can be added in cis- and/or trans- positions. This is, in fact, the traditional way to make something like this; unix is just what happens when you make two siamese dock-with-tubs but don't induct them.

On the other hand, adding inducting still-lifes to an existing unix would be very difficult, since they would have to advance at c to avoid the receding spark.

A junk CatForce result hinted at a nonspartan catalysis when I was looking for something else. I fed that accident into Bellman, and here it is:

A Spartan catalyst that can replace the eater on dock in some situations (first catalysis), the eater 2 in others (second catalysis), and also has some completely new ones (third catalysis):

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
12bo14bo14bo$2o8b3o2b2o8b3o2b2o8b3o$bo7bo6bo7bo6bo7bo$bobo5b2o5bobo5b

2o2bo10b2o2bo$9bo14b4o$9bo18bo9b2obo$9bo!
The main problem with it is the clearance past the rightmost eater.

EDIT: Unfortunately, it appears to reduce nothing in either the Elementary Conduits collection or the H-to-G collection. The dependent syringe comes closest, but that problematic eater blocks the output.

EDIT 2: Another unusual catalysis:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 13, rule = B3/S23

Pretty standard, though. What were you doing to turn that up, if you weren't deliberately trying to channel a switch engine?

Here's some prior art -- you even got the same form of the catalyst, and there are a lot of choices for it.

One of the most interesting features of CatForce is that it doesn't make any assumptions about what actually happens while catalysts do their thing, only that they do it. So, every once in a while, you'll see a catalyst or pair of catalysts do something weird, like this:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 24, rule = LifeHistory

It might be possible to salvage this into a synthesis for 14.208, but it would be difficult to make it useful. A synthesis exists already from 11 gliders, and this method takes 9, so you would have to be able to save this by adding just one extra glider.

I hope this reaction is known:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 22, rule = LifeHistory
15.D$14.3D$13.2D2BD$13.5B$13.6B$12.8B$13.2B2A4B$14.B2A5B$15.7B$15.6B$

It seems like it could have some applications.

It can be used to do things like these (obsolete) p539 and p515 guns, where two mutually reset each other in tandem:

Code: Select all

x = 305, y = 127, rule = LifeHistory

It can also put a B in very tight spaces, due to its extremely thin reaction envelope (5 cells at least, 8 or 9 cells at most) such as Scorbie's thumb B-to-H:

Unfortunately, an extra block and blinker are produced. There might be a way to clean it up with the r's exhaust, though...
