My spaceship page http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/ss.htm has about 3 dozen syntheses each of LWSS and MWSS, plus a couple of dozen for HWSS. The related flotilla page also has a few flotillae that are close enough together that special methods are needed to add some of these spaceships in certain positions.

Yes, it seems as if a slightly more complex and robust feedback loop is needed to generate infinite novelty.

The random-restart LWSS stream hitting random ash constellations makes a fairly decent novelty-generating mechanism. I suppose it might produce larger and larger cycles, effectively calculating some hideously complex recursive function, which could theoretically count as infinite novelty.

But if that feedback loop doesn't fall into a periodic cycle, it is pretty much guaranteed to fall prey to an even less interesting novelty killer. If the ash+LWSS interaction keeps generating new constellations, then eventually it will happen to create a fishhook eater in the right orientation to catch the LWSS stream -- or any of an infinite number of less likely LWSS-eating objects.

Any LWSS-stream eater will be very likely to shut down all novelty production in the pattern, fairly quickly. Previous "infinite novelty" patterns have usually had enough stages of feedback to make both shutdown and simple periodicity much less likely.

It finishes sometime before the billionth generation, when a LWSS eater forms naturally!

@towerator Actually it would have been slightly possible if it weren't for that restored boat. That "miraculous" restored boat gets in the way of the pi and looks very hard to clean up cheaply, so I would say this is nearly impossible. What luck.

2SL seed for longboat-on-beehive pseudo-SL:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

The only decision I made was made
of flowers, to jump universes to one of springtime in
a land of former winter, where no invisible walls stood,
or could stand for more than a few hours at most...

This exact pseudo-SL showed up during a Spartan conduit search at one point:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
11bo$10bobo$11bobo$12b2o2$12b2o$11bo2bo$12b2o$3o$bo$b3o!
It may have a use somewhere.

This almost works as a highway-robbing eater if it weren't for the problematic one bit at gen 19:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
2bo$3b2o$2b2o4$2o$obo$2bo2bo$b2obobo$3bob2o$3bo$2b2o!

probably my new favorite useless component (found it in a soup)

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
13b2o$12bo2bo$13bobo$14bo$10b2o$9bo2bo$10bobo$11bo$7b2o$6bo2bo$bo5bobo
$obo5bo$obo$bo4bo$6b2o$5bobo!
Edit: just realized it works without the beehive

I wouldn't consider it useless, althoough I'm not sure if it's an improvement on existing technology.
That being said, there's still a good chance of that being the case.

The component is frozen, so it would be useful if one needs to construct something with a tail...
I'm not sure how useful that would be, though.

Trivial optimization:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
9bo$8bobo$9bo$5b2o$4bo2bo$5bobo$6bo$2b2o$bo2bo$2bobo$3bo2$b2o$obo$2bo!

Here's a strange one - it somehow turns into a (double inverse) symmetrical pattern on each generation until there are four still lifes.:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
bo$o$o$b2o$2bo!
