Sorry, meant to answer this sooner. I don't know about a Bellman solution, but here's a related old-hat result. It's possible to restore the useful two-thirds of that blinker, repeatedly, with a p6 pipsquirter:

Code: Select all

#C p6 Herschel fanout (64 and 65 steps)
#C The fanout uses Noam Elkies' p6 pipsquirt. One of the two output
#C Herschels (appearing in gen 64) is turned right w.r.t. the input
#C Herschel, the other one (gen 65) is turned left and flipped.

I guess that this didn't make it into Hersrch in the form of Lx65p6 and Rx64p6 conduits, only because lower-period forms of both conduits were available. Makes it easy to forget about this nice Herschel-splitting reaction, though.

It might be worth looking at this again, especially if higher-period pipsquirters are found. I guess p7 or p8 pipsquirters wouldn't work, though -- haven't checked higher periods.

Or... I don't remember if this Herschel splitter has been thoroughly checked against the current gun collection. Seems as if it would be easy enough to attach a syringe to the input. But it would only work for p6N, of course.

Found this R-to-G while doing related things--it's either new or just not in the October edition of the elementary conduits collection.

I searched for conduits that involved a very early catalysis of a Herschel, aiming to find a new dependent conduit that was compatible with the Syringe. I had no luck in that regard but I did find a couple of interesting reactions:

Code: Select all

x = 68, y = 25, rule = LifeHistory
64.B$.B61.3D$.2B60.BDB$.3B6.A51.2B3D$.4B5.3A49.5B$2.4B7.A48.6B$3.4B5.

3C9.4B$2.C9.2B33.C9.2B2AB$.C44.C12.2A!
I think the first one is only compatible with one of the R->H conduits, giving a new R-G:

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 27, rule = LifeHistory
7.4B$8.4B$9.4B6.A$10.4B5.3A$11.4B7.A$12.4B5.2A$13.4B4.5B$8.4B2.4B5.6B

The second gives a tolerable B->G, or a B->H if you have a bit more time and space:

Non-spartan backwards R-to-B:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = LifeHistory
11.2A$6.2A2.A.A$6.A3.A4.A$7.3A.5A$2A7.A.A$.A7.A.A.3A$.A.A6.2A.A2.A$2.
2A11.2A4$7.C$6.3C$6.C$6.2D2.D$7.3D$8.D!
Normally that large catalyst is equivalent to an Eater 3, but in this case, the reaction specifically uses the catalyst's weird way of sticking out a few cells while recovering in order to delete an annoying block.

Yep, that's a direct H->MWSS. The only issue is the leftover beehive, but it can easily be worked around with things like this:

Wow. That's a nice find for sure! How well can it be hooked up to a syringe? G->MWSS and MWSS->G are both pretty simple now.

Also it is spartan.. A real gem.
Physics: sophistication from simplicity.

What the!!! Real congrats to Kazyan!
Another possibility is to use the beehive up to make a herschel or glider pair, I think. So that the reaction goes:
G + hive -> H or 2G
2G or H -> MWSS + the same hive
for a spartan G->MWSS.

I mean, the 45-degree one is longer known and smaller.

Code: Select all

I'll update this post with any gun improvements I find.

For now, here's a G->MWSS by a different mechanism that isn't too useful, repeat time 475, but the lane is unblocked during recovery.

Stable G-> MWSS with very few non-spartan elements.. and an atrocious repeat time. Should be way improvable, Hersrch isn't really up to date anymore.

Huh!! Didn't notice that LWSS/MWSS to G. A lot of interesting discoveries recently! Congrats to gmc-nxtman!

The MWSS-to-G that I posted is from Ivan Fomichev.

EDIT: In retrospect, I should've credited him in the original post...

Whoops. Sorry for serial posting... But Congrats to Ivan!!

And another important thing:
Kazyan's H-MWSS is a dependent component! Can that work directly with the syringe-variant-with-eater2-that-only-dependent-conduits-can-follow? This leaves the beehive but it greatly increases glider constructibility, I think!

It definitely works, one of the patterns I posted above uses the dependent syringe to feed the new MWSS conduit. The beehive is a bit of a nuisance though, and after trying to get some advantage out of the surplus beehive for a few hours to no avail I think preceding this H->MWSS by a pair of R64s is probably our best bet for a good repeat time or for spartan design.

I see... I guess the silver reflector variant G-H with two R64s attatched (or something similar) would be the best spartan G->MWSS for now, then.
EDIT: Can anyone try to find a bellman catalyst to clean up that hive?

This is amazing!

This may not be very useful, but I noticed a glider can do the same trick as the boat, which leaves a block to clean up instead of the hive:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 38, rule = LifeHistory

Wow. I was actually working on some composite G->*WSS recently. Didn't expect a direct one to show up so soon. Congratulations!

Using the new G->MWSS mechanism I can get a repeat time of 98 with fairly reasonable bounding box:

I found getting better compression at a similar size difficult because the clean-up glider would need to come from the other side. For compression equal to that of the Syringe here are the best G->MWSS and G->LWSS that I could up with (they are optimised versions of the patterns here):

Re: The Hunting of the New Herschel Conduits

Post by Scorbie » October 17th, 2015, 10:28 am

Kazyan's discovery made me install Golly. Oh well.
Here are my attempts towards slow-salvo constructible G->M.
Pure spartan: (repeat time 497?)

In order to shoot down the problematic hive in Kazyan's converter, you should either
1) Shoot a backwards glider and turn 180 degrees.
2) Shoot a forwards glider and turn 90 degrees.
Conduits shooting forward gliders are not that common, and I think the only ones useable are the following:

Code: Select all

I was thinking something like this:

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 58, rule = B3/S23

@gmc_nxtman Yep, I hope there are something good along these lines! Would be better if the whole thing was spartan. I'm pretty sure there are a LOT of hive consuming syringes.

@Calcyman I guess that's about the best we could get with Hersrch?
How about using Simkin's B-to-B to turn the B upwards closer and faster?After all, the hive is symmetrical :wink: (Or something along these lines)
And as I said above, a hive-consuming syringe with the output heading upwards would be nice.

Very unlikely, but any chance of a MWSS heisenburp?

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
9.A$7.A3.A$6.A$6.A4.A$6.5A4$.2A$A2.A$.A.A$2.A!
And there is a slight slight possibility that MWSS reflectors are as cheap as glider reflectors...
