*grumble*

Code: Select all

#C Probably unusable fast "pre" QB->B
x = 24, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
12.2C7.D$12.2C7B2D$5.17B2D$4.18BD$3.4B3C11BD$2.4BC3BC2B2.3B$.D3BCB.3B
C3B.2B$D3B.C3.2BC2B$3D7.2B$9.4B$9.B2AB$10.2A!
There's still a chance the block can be restored from the intermediate R's ash, but I would have preferred if the R was better behaved :(

Why, sure! What was that you were saying about overkill?

Code: Select all

#C HNE16T14 saves the day -- sort of.
#C NW8T186 is the only suffix I could find
#C that produced a glider in the right range.

Obviously it's possible to get a signal out eventually (e.g., add a few more Herschel conduits, then bounce the block killer in with a couple of Snarks). But that's all definitely out of range of practicality. Too bad -- it's a very nice find otherwise.

If the source conduit were one where the Herschel could continue, the next spare glider could maybe be bounced in with a single Snark to kill the block. But no luck there either, of course.

A nice pi-to-explosion:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 22, rule = LifeHistory
6.A$6.3A$9.A$8.2A2$.2A$2.A$2.A.A$3.2A4$A$3A$3.A$2.2A25.2A$29.A$27.A.A
$11.3C13.2A$11.C.C9.2A$11.C.C9.A.A$24.2A!
Unusually, the ship/eater combo catalyzes the reaction twice. (And since the explosion moves backward from the pi, it would probably be best to look for a G-to-X from this.)

Just for the record - the best non-destructive tandem signal spartan circuit currently known is G4, has minimum of 24 SL, with 325 ticks recovery time.

If there is a way to remove the debris top left block, this will make a nice non-destructive G8 period doubler reciever (which is pretty useful in circuitry):

Code: Select all

x = 51, y = 44, rule = B3/S23

Nice! If there's a known R-mango-to-X that works with this, I'd definitely throw both conduits into the next elementary-conduits collection.

Continuing the single-character assignments, I suppose this could be an 'M' object, unless there's another good name for an R-mango and we should reserve 'M' for in case we ever find a direct Herschel-to-MWSS converter.

The R-mango looks like a very interesting object!

For example here is a small sample of first catalysts, all of which fit with with Extrementhusiast's bookend-to-R-mango:

"D" it is, I would say -- that name is in Mark Niemiec's database, and in the Life Lexicon from way back.

Yes, there's lots of good stuff in there. I can get the R-mango/dove to travel well just by noodling around manually with some of these options. No doubt automated searches can turn up much more interesting stuff.

Code: Select all

x = 53, y = 37, rule = LifeHistory

-- Check out the new Build 160 LifeViewer, by the way: LifeHistory runs and displays correctly, no more VIEWONLY tags! And you can run the pattern backwards with the step-back button or the 'b' key.

But has anyone tried to get a century signal into that conduit? It might be good to come up with some alternate ways to breed doves. It's really too bad that the pi-to-2C signal splitter doesn't connect here.

At least it works with the first Pi-to-C in the collection.
And I found a D-to-G:

Code: Select all

Also, I can't help feeling that there's some sort of conduit that produces a bookend from a mangled B, something like this:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
6.3D$5.D2.D$5.2D3$7.A$6.3A$6.A.2A2$.2A$A.A$2.A!
dvgrn wrote:It might be good to come up with some alternate ways to breed doves.
I do know that a bookend+spark produces one:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
.3A$A2.A$2A2$.A!
The only way I know to produce one from a clean LOM is like so:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 15, rule = LifeHistory
8.A$7.A.A$8.A2$6.5A$5.A4.A$4.A2.A$.A2.A.2A$A.A.A5.A15.3D$.A2.A4.A.A
13.D2.D$4.2A2.A2.A12.D2.D$9.2A8.2C4.2D$18.C.C$18.C.C$18.2C!
As for producing a LOM in that position, I have seen things like this differently mangled B:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 7, rule = LifeHistory
13.3B5.A$11.A3B2A4.2A$9.2ABAB3A2.2A$9.A4B3A2.2A$.3D5.A3BA2B3.2A$D2.D
6.3A2B$3D9.A!
The base reaction actually produces two LOMs, but one gets suppressed by this particular mangling.

R Mango/Dove also turns into a very accessible Herschel pretty quickly if you feed it a blinker. I went to no long effort to restore the blinker. The extra block catalyst just converts the active area into a TL near the sacrificed blinker, without the block it becomes a distant pond.

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

It runs with bellman_szlim_073.exe

The basic idea used for this search is to limit results to anything that fits in a small enough rectangle. For 'max-global-complexity 21' it means on-cells in the Bellman results must fit in about a 7-by-7 or 8-by-5 rectangle.

I'm currently working on a more official version, but there were a few more issues than I expected, so it will probably be a few more weeks. I will wait to document the new features and settings until that release.

I'm a real bellman novice, so pardon me if I ask dumb questions...
The catalysis look interesting, but aren't the results somewhat similar to ordinary bellman output? Did your program save you time to get the same results as bellman?

Edit: and could you tell me what precisely global-complexity means?

EDIT2: I'm not sure if I have the time to learn a new search utility, but seeing the descriptions in that link sure looks quite nice... (these days I just don't do searching ig it requires a new utility, like Bellman.) If I had infinite time, this would surely be in my priority (along with randomagar ofind tweaking gfind afind etc.)

Yes, that's the point!
With 'max-global-complexity 21' that search runs in about 75 minutes.
If I reduce max-global-complexity to 15 it runs in less than 3 minutes, but now I only get results that fit in a 5-by-5 rectangle.

Without a limit on the size of results, like it would be in standard Bellman, that seach would be totally impractical to run to completion.
