Take a look at these two collisions:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 6, rule = Life
4bo$2obo$2ob3o2$2ob2o$2ob2o!

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

They both have the same junk, but in different places (?)

Apparently this has been found before, and it's the standard way to build 15.76 -- add one more glider to clean up the pre-pond.

First, if you advance both of these 3 generations, they arrive at exactly the same point, so the same junk IS in the same place in both of them. Second, these aren't really "collisions" as such, because the gliders could never get to the positions shown, as they would have interacted with the blocks 3 generations earlier (not to mention the fact that the 3 blocks aren't stable together). On the other hand, if you really want to construct this object, you could do so by starting with a a similar object with a boat in place of the glider, and then turn the boat into a glider:

Code: Select all

x = 95, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

It's hard to believe the still life xs14_32qj4ko isn't on Catagolue.

I think that the eater4 could have some uses in practical stable circuitry, as it has a few ways to catalyze Pi's and HF's. I'm surprised it hasn't come up in any bellman searches yet. Speaking of stable circuitry, I think that HF, TL, LoM, Octimino, and Switch engine could be in conduits. (HF -> x and TL -> x are unlikely, but X -> HF and X -> TL are likely)

That's quite confusing. For example, the page http://catagolue.appspot.com/object?apg ... rule=b3s23 says that there are no sample soups, but the page http://catagolue.appspot.com/census/b3s23/C1/xs15 shows that xs15_0gbb8oz343 occured 38824 times already.

There is also a non-standard way to build 15.76.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 17, rule = B3/S23

It is cheaper than a standard on 2 gliders.
In the 4G Table see 7 position in the 11 row.

Oops, I forgot to check that nice new table -- how silly of me.

Seems to me that your "non-standard" way should become the new standard way. I know Mark Niemiec is working on updating his Web pages to include new discoveries from the past few years -- but that's a very big job, of course.

It will be wonderful to have a glider synthesis database that's both searchable and reasonably up-to-date...!

This leads to this 5-glider synthesis, which is better than the previous 7-glider one (unless Bob Shemyakin has found a smaller one; I haven't yet had time to assimmilate all his syntheses):

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 11
7boo6bo$3bo3bobo4bo$4boobo6b3o$3boo18boo$22bobboboo$22boobobo$12bo10bo

Billabob wrote:The pattern does not work in the viewer.
The viewer knows about totalistic rules (like B3/S23) but not rule table ones, as these require access to rule files on your computer, which aren't on the web site (and even if some of them were pre-installed there, it would also involve quite complicated parsing, not to mention interpretation).

Using LifeHistory in this way provides nice coloration to make the glider gun visible, but it makes cutting and pasting difficult, since when converting to QuickLife, Golly converts both white living cells and blue dead cells to living.

What is the preferred method to access the database? Via the script, or directly, i.e. /object?apgcode=<code>&rule=<rule> or /object/<code>/<rule> ? I've added code into the search page of my web site (in the next version) to provide direct links from searched objects to their corresponding Cataglue pages, but I can change the syntax to use the script method if that is preferable.

Also, are any other parameters than apgcode= and rule= accepted?

The viewer will collapse LifeHistory patterns to two-state executable patterns. It can also display the initial generation of the LifeHistory pattern with the states coloured but can't execute it in that format. To do this add a comment to the pattern with [[ VIEWONLY ]] in it:

This synthesis method was known before, although I think it's buried deep in the soup search topic. Bob's collection of 5-glider syntheses (found here) contains an alternate solution:

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 15, rule = B3/S23

16bobobo$4bo23bo2bo$4b2o6b3o14b2o$3bobo8bo$13bo!
There doesn't seem to be a known 4-glider synthesis of this object.

Random idea: I think that a caterpillar synthesis could be made with a not-too-ridiculous number of gliders (this would shave off a massive amount of gliders) by making the blinker trailers by synthesising and destroying blinker puffers so as not to need to synthesise every individual blinker. Similarly, one could make a gun to repeatedly synthesise segments of the helix, and instead of synthesising every individual ship in the helix, one could just turn the gun on and off as required. The same technique could be applied to other repetitive syntheses, like the shield bug, centipede, and waterbear.

By the way, this reaction could be useful(R + G = FNB + 2G + BLK):

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
bo$2o$b2o4$12bo$11b2o$11bobo!
One in a similar fashion that unfortunately doesn't duplicate:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
bo$2o$b2o12$15bo$14b2o$14bobo!

I think that this spaceship is viable for synthesis:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 17, rule = B3/S23

Pi eater with a strange reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 50, rule = B3/S23

Nice! I discovered that bookends first catalyst a while back, but never thought it could be used for anything.

Could this be useful?

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

Here's another catalyst that probably has some potential (and never came up in searches for some reason)

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
2bo3b2o$2b2o3bo$2o5bob2o$bo2b2obo2bo$3bobob2o$3b2o$o$5o$4bo$2bo$2b2o!
It's probably equivalent to something...
