Indeed, here is one such potential technique (this mechanism was found by Noam Elkies in 2010):

These are the results when I fed the dependent block to catforce. Many of them are interesting for their own sake, and are quite nice potential conduits.

### Re: Incomplete search patterns - try to complete

I've started to search LWSS->H, and I've got nice ignition, from a block that can be generated by glider. The only thing left is to convert the spark into H and get a glider to the correct place:

Here are two variations:

This looks nice, but... maybe I'm expecting too much from CatForce, but have you looked for ways to shape the active reaction to restore the block, so that an additional glider isn't needed?

Also, are you limiting the search to Spartan conduits? Otherwise, it seems unlikely that you'll end up with a circuit that's significantly better than this ancient piece of Bronze Age technology from my email archives -- looks like I built it in January 2007:

Code: Select all

``````#C stable LWSS-to-Herschel converter -- produces a Herschel
#C descendant that can feed an F116 (shown) or R64 conduit.
#C Recovery time is 978 generations, but the output
#C Herschel is available soon after the initial collision.
#C There's a clear path through the circuit if the beehive is
#C not present, so it could also be used as a demultiplexer.
Nowadays, if non-Spartan circuitry is allowed, we can catch that output glider with a Snark or two plus a syringe, and get a signal back to rebuild the beehive several hundred ticks sooner... but anything that requires waiting for an output glider, and catching it and processing it, is still going to be kind of slow. If you have to use a signal output to rebuild something, it doesn't matter too much if the reset signal is in the form of a Herschel or a glider:
In the non-spartan category I doubt better than a LWSS->G + syringe? We have stable LWSS->G, right?
Here's something really exciting: (EDIT: Okay, not too exciting)
This is the first time I've seen something similar to an edgeshooting lom:
I might not be remembering a recent development in *WSS-to-G technology, but the most recent discussion I can find is from back in 2009. For X-to-*WSS, there are some other experiments in old messages, but nothing that seems significantly smaller than the new pi-to-LWSS. Probably they could be rebuilt smaller again now -- and certainly circuits that recover faster are easy now.
(Not really relevant, since it would require a periodic converter -- but there's also this way to collide any *WSS with a Herschel, and get the same glider out...)
Almost certainly this latest syringe-assisted LWSS-to-H device can be made to recover in less than 500 ticks, and quite possibly even less than 400 ticks, at the cost of more complexity and a larger bounding box. The trick will be to bounce the glider around and hit some sacrificial bait object that makes a B-heptomino in the right place to feed the Herschel-to-beehive converter... while simultaneously getting another signal out (maybe a glider from an R64 conduit, instead of the F116?) and routing it around to rebuild the bait.
It would be interesting if this could be done with the G->block conduit, the block being the bait, and a glider hitting it to produce a pi, which is run through a pi-to-H to feed the H-to-beehive. If that's not complicated enough, we could add another stage... it would look ridiculous, but the repeat time would probably go down a little more.
I don't think anyone has had a fresh look at block-to-pi-to-Herschel converters for a while. Last time I did a review was a long time ago, when I was designing the ladder circuit for the original prototype universal constructor.
One of the things I noticed is that it's possible to catch a glider and make a boat-bit, hit it with another glider to make a block (said glider would otherwise safely pass by the boat-bit site), and then hit it with a third glider to produce a pi explosion, which could be Spartanly converted to a Herschel somehow, with the circuits staying out of the gliders' way.
I forget exactly which known pi-to-H mechanism it was, but it would probably be easy to rediscover. At the time it turned out that three gliders was too complicated -- it was easier to use the two-gliders mechanism that's in the prototype U.C. ladder. But a lot has changed recently; it might be worth a fresh look.
An almost pi-c:
Here are the pi collision ptbsearch results filtered: the left part has potential, and the right... mayyyybe.
If ptbsearch searches catalysts by reacting time, then I have searched for all 3 catalyst pi perturbations until gen 59.
### Re: Incomplete search patterns - try to complete
I think 2c/9 diagonal ships might actually be possible to find in a reasonable amount of time. On my current JLS search, I've been getting many semi-promising partials such as this one:
Code: Select all
``````x = 22, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

9bo3b2o2bo2bo\$11bob2ob2ob2o\$5b2obo6bo3b2o\$7ob4obobob2o\$8b2obob6o\$12b2o
!
``````
I didn't find any D2_x-symmetrical ones within 20x20, but I didn't let the non-all-inclusive search run to completion.
Also, 300th post!
Edit: Weird sparky partial:
Code: Select all
``````x = 17, y = 17, rule = B3/S23

Well, I sincerely apologize for making Gustavo's life slightly harder, but here's a 516 or so tick LWSS->G. (Thanks dvgrn for the conduits.)

EDIT: Does not actually work. Did I really think that was an lwss? :/

I'm sorry, but that actually doesn't work, because the pattern you are converting to a glider is not, in fact, a LWSS:

Code: Select all

You probably overlooked that stray cell because the same LWSS + boat collision still produces a Pi in nearly the same location, just shifted one cell to the right. This causes problems with the resulting glider colors, but shouldn't be too hard to fix with different conduits.

That wouldn't have been a problem anyway -- Gustavo can get an LWSS-to-G down below 512-tick recovery time, and a bounding box under 75x75, starting from the LWSS+boat collision he picked out. I just hope nobody else beats him to it...

### Re: Incomplete search patterns - try to complete

I would have used this:

Code: Select all

``````x = 23, y = 15, rule = LifeHistory
21.2D\$20.DBD\$19.3BD\$18.4B\$17.4B\$16.4B\$15.4B\$14.4B\$14.3B\$14.CB\$2.BC7B.
BCBC\$2.2BC8B.2C\$C3BC10B\$.4C8B\$.12B.B! ``````
But both H-boat converters I saw clashed with the output glider/input spaceship. And I didn't manage to figure out catforce to search for new ones.
Just goes to show that Life has a rather steep learning curve, and that I should avoid embarrassing myself in public.
Beginner's luck is still a powerful force, though! People find all kinds of things because they don't know enough not to look for them. And never mind the "embarrassing" part. I say foolish things here almost every week and nobody seems to mind.
CatForce or ptbsearch or catgl would probably find you a new way to place a boat on the edge of the reaction envelope, eventually -- but it might take hours of search time, and would probably produce hundreds of not-quite-usable results to sort through.
Probably better to just start with the collision that Gustavo picked out. He made a lot of progress today, but his last posting could still be improved quite easily.
On the other hand, the conduit that restores the boat is kind of awkward -- maybe it would be worth finding something better. Really the best use of CatForce/ptbsearch/catgl would be to hit some small object with an LWSS, make an explosion, and then try to tame the explosion to get a glider back out, along with the original object in the original location.
There's probably something like that out there, smaller than 75x65, but it's going to take some serious inspiration and/or perspiration to find it.
