I call this "snake with feather". "11-snake" would be a snake whose body is lengthened by 5 cells. The junk looks highly artificial, and not worth synthesizing. However, a simple predecessor from the above reaction can be formed from a block, a honeyfarm, and an exploded block. Replacing the block by a glider and the exploded block by a slightly different one gives this:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
3b2o$2bo$2bo$3bo2$b2o$o2bo$b3o$2bo4$b3o$3bo$2bo!
This would take around 7 gliders. Since this still-life can already be built from 6 gliders, this reaction is interesting, but confers no advantage.
gmc_nxtman wrote:I also have this very clean stabilization of a glider-producing switch engine, with no debris, and just one backward glider:
There are a spurious block and blinker (i.e. debris) at the very back. In fact, this exact same census (with spurious glider, block, and blinker) is produced by the standard 5-glider synthesis:

Code: Select all

x = 58, y = 46, rule = B3/S23
56bo$55bo$55b3o7$2bo$obo$b2o25$3o$2bo$bo$28b2o$27b2o$29bo2$3b2o$4b2o$
3bo!
gmc_nxtman wrote:New induction coils aren't necessarily novel, unless they're smaller than previous ones. The smallest 4-cell induction coil is the block, and I could post the following induction coil as "new":
This is just one induction coil trivially (i.e. non-essentially) inducting another. Gluing together old pieces to make newer ones is rarely noteworthy, unless the combination possesses some functionality that the parts lack, or the combination arises from some natural reaction (like a soup or cheap glider synthesis), or is a necessary step in some other construction or synthesis. There are hundreds of Lego pieces, and these are interesting; there are billions of things one can make by combining Lego pieces, and most of these are not.
gmc_nxtman wrote:But it isn't really useful. No offense though. Just that still lifes/components of still lifes are less notable.
Exactly. This particular still-life is not particularly interesting, unless someone has some reason to try to construct it (either as part of some catalyst, like the ones found by Bellman, or just "because it's there").

On my web site, I have tried to show syntheses for most (if not all) objects and pseudo-objects up to a certain size, depending on periods (e.g. still-lifes up to 15 bits, pseudo-still-lifes up to 16,
P2 oscillators up to 18, P2 pseudo-oscillators up to 17, other oscillators and pseudo-oscillators up to 21 bits, and some up to 22-25 bits). The vast majority of these syntheses are boring and not worth noting, mostly being formed by cutting and pasting mechanisms from earlier syntheses. I include them for completeness, but most of them are the kind of things that aren't worth posting (let alone including on the Wiki). For the larger sizes, it's obvious that the vast majority of oscillators are merely larger variants of smaller oscillators that have already been synthesized. There are often a few that aren't (or that are variants with pathological geometries that resist known synthesis methods). These few are the ones worthy of attention. (For example, of the 57 22-bit variants of Silver's P5, one still eludes synthesis, making this otherwise uninteresting oscillator noteworthy).

My main interest in Life (Conway's) is methuselahs or unstable objects with an interesting final census, which could lead to a glider synthesis and that the objects formation is non-trivial (unlike the "natural" schick engine) and small catalysts. I may try running Bellman, but will take a bit of work (installing linux).

A fuse producing gliders in the direction of the fuse:
The gliders pile up, producing a crystal of blinkers.

Also, an agar:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 29, rule = B3/S23:T29,29

This still life is what apgsearch calls "11-boat wrap tail". I prefer to just call it "Boat with long curled tail"

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

Also, a little methuselah with a spark coil in its output:
Actually a dead spark coil.

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

The blinker and beehive can be made from 5 gliders (blinker + 1/4 honeyfarm). I am not sure about the other junk. Since this still-life can already be made from just 5 gliders anyway, this reaction conveys no advantages to make it worth trying to synthesize. (By the way, in your RLE fragments, you should probably use rule = B3/S23, rather than rule = Life, for compatibility with more Life programs).

This is a dead spark coil (a still-life with odd symmetry) rather than a spark coil (an oscillator with even symmetry). It occurs quite frequently in symmetrical soups, along with other similar symmetrical still-lifes, like pairs of docks, buns/R-bees, wings/R-loaves, or doves/R-mangos). Since all of these can be made very cheaply by themselves, it rarely makes sense to try to salvage them from soups.

This is exactly the same kind of change (flat billiard table end to tub on the end) that changes the cauldron (P8) into 1-2-3-4 (P4).

The block and a cousin of the spark are easy, and can be made from 2 gliders each. The honeyfarm predecessor is more problematic, since I don't know any way to make this cheaply; most of the methods I know made a related (but useless) predecessor in which the active point is not extended. If the honeyfarm predecessor has the point already extended, the spark will be considerably more expensive, as it would have to be shoved forwards all at once.

I think it could be useful to start WinLifeSearch with this partial pattern to get new spaceships. Unfortunately, period-6 is difficult to search at.

Thunderbird is an artificial methuselah created when two blinkers approach from opposite sides. Good luck getting two blocks (let alone in those phases) in behind an approaching blinker! This is 18.8141, and can already be made from 7 gliders using a variant of the add-dock mechanism mentioned above (which can also give the bookend-siamese-bookend on tub, boat, or any other still-life with a point, or on an inductor with a line-of-3, like a bun, bookend, house, etc.).

There are many reactions where a glider can hit the pointed edge of a still-life (e.g. tub, boat, loaf, etc.) where the results are the same, regardless of the direction from which the glider hits. This is also true of the two 2-glider collisions to make a B-heptomino.

Thanks. I have been noting all the glider syntheses that have been posted on various threads, but have not yet had the time to integrate them into my database, so most of my counts are 6-12 months out of date - which is still correct for most objects, but not for all the recently-optimized ones.
