The Twitterbot reported a pretty cool period 2 oscillator:

Here is a 13 glider synthesis (although I wouldn't be surprised if something better was already in Bob Shemyakin's results):

Mark Niemiec's database has this as 28 gliders, >1 glider per bit, so this is a significant improvement. Three names listed are "14-bit P2 #1", "flip-flop", and "muttering moat" (there's a typo there -- "muttering" is intended). The last two are generic names that apply to many p2 oscillators.

xp2_3lgh1lo is in Dean Hickerson's oscillator collection as 2.1.0 (unnamed). Now I'm waiting for the first unnamed object to show up with an apgcode that happens to spell something appropriate... well, something inappropriate would probably be just as amusing.

the best I could find was xp2_31ago which is pretty boring.

Looks like one of my recent symmetric apgsearch runs turned up a p9 in D4_+2 a few days ago, the old 'worker bee' oscillator, just before the Twitterbot started paying attention to symmetric soup results. Looks like that was the first time Catagolue has collected anything period 9, isn't it?

Seems like a somewhat promising soup, but maybe not too likely to improve on the current-best synthesis (19 gliders).

So what's the next likely new period for Catagolue? Any bets on whether it will be an unknown oscillator next time?

It seems that almost all of the common self-sustainable randomagar/gsearch results were found by Catagolue... I would be impressed if Sokwe's p10 or p32 showed up in the search, although that seems pretty unlikely.
By the way, Sokwe, have you used randomagar or randagar to find these?
I really hope a period 7 popping out of Catagolue... It seems unlikely as well, but who knows what will come out? I think it's possible fo r either a new p7 or a burloaferimeter or airforce coming out of a symmetric soup.

If you're talking about asymmetric soups, then I would bet it's going to be period 24, namely a figure eight on pulsar.

I found these using Nicolay Beluchenko's Windows GUI for Randagar (available here). I also found the following oscillators with Randagar:

Code: Select all

Does anyone happen to know where this 40-cell oscillator, xp4_8cf3jggj3fc8zy0pvvpz13fccwccf31, has been seen before?

Koenig's Object Database has it as 40P4.11, but other references seem to be sparse. Is it a relatively recent find?

Not exactly a slow-salvo recipe -- that would be impressive, to hit a single small target with fifteen unidirectional slow gliders and end up with xs18_69ar4kozw23. This looks more like "six-object constellation plus three synchronized gliders" to me.

Is there a known way to spark this still life to get Elkies' p5, though? The 24-glider synthesis starts from a slightly different base still life. Mark Niemiec's database lists the still life as 18.6226, buildable with 29 gliders... by building Elkies' p5 first! So if nothing else, this certainly takes 18.6226 off the expensive list (>1 gliders per bit).

Here's the slow salvo version I lifted it from. I neglected to post it.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 29, rule = B3/S23
2b3o2$6b2o$6b2o5$8b2o$b2o4bo2bo2b2o$o2bo4b2o3b2o$obo$bo2$11b3o$13bo$
12bo4$15b2o$14bo2bo$15b2o2$11bo$10bobo$10bobo$11bo4b2o$16b2o!
From what I know, this synchronized spark pair activates Elkies' p5. I just don't know how to make the sparks cheaply.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

Finally we have a 34-bitter.
Here's how it came about:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
6b2o$6b2o$bo14b2o$obo12bo2bo$obo13b2o$bo3$5bo6b3o$5bo5bo2bo$5bo6b2o2$
16b2o$15bo2bo$16b2o!
EDIT: Strange - I thought I'd use the twitter timestamp to track down which haul contained this. It was tweeted at 9:30pm PST (4:30 UTC, 19 minutes before I posted here), and only 2 reported hauls were committed from the 4:15-4:30 UTC window, neither of which contained xs34. None of the hauls I could access from the recents screen contained xs34, which were all my own and went back to 3:14 UTC. I'm curious how this is.

Looking at the D8_1 still lives, the largest odd-bit-count is 53, and comes from an aries variant. Most of the other large stills are also aries or krake variants. It makes sense, the only surviving bit on the diagonal is at the tip of a symmetric forward growth that halts stably. While not the only way to create such a large still life, it's at least orders of magnitude more probable.

Let's see, you can get the haul ID from the hashsoup link. So the haul was "auy2MsbQhvag"... and then the URL for the haul seems to need the MD5 hash for that 12-character string, I assume to avoid case problems in the URL. So that gives us

http://catagolue.appspot.com/haul/b3s23/C1/4da9fa577f615e261a8db200ef4a2a66

-- which shows a date stamp of 2015-04-26 at 04:14:11 UTC, just barely before the time window you mentioned.

EDIT: On a completely irrelevant note: the following is not one of the places I'd have expected to be able to build a candlefrobra without touching the surrounding still lifes. Technically I guess it's either a "block on cis candelfrobra", or a "trans-block and long hook eating tub", or according to Catagolue a plain old candlefrobra on trans-block".

If you use the "candlefrobra" terminology, this should be (at least in my opinion) "candlefrobra with trans-block", not "candlefrobra on trans-block". On usually means the parts are attached, but sometimes it just means one is being stabilized by the other, such as block on table, although usually the word and is used for such purposes. However, because candlefrobra is the name of the actual oscillator stabilized with a cis-block, rather than just the inductor (the long hook eating tub), with would be used to describe a slightly different version of the candlefrobra, but with the important part (the rotor) still the same. So I would call this either "candlefrobra with trans-block", or (my preferred terminology) "trans-block and long hook eating tub".
There. That's my nomenclature system for naming variations of oscillators.
