This is the weirdest soup I've seen. It generates the following objects:
  • Two LWSSes, one of which is permanent and the other temporary;
  • Two MWSSes, both of which are permanent;
  • A temporary dock-on-dock;
  • A permanent quadpole.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
4bobob3ob3o$obobo3bo3b4o$3o4bo6b2o$4ob4o3bobo$o5bo2bo3b3o$obobob3ob2ob

2o7bo$bo2bob5obo$2obobo2bobobo$6b3ob2ob3o$o2b2obo2bob3obo!
Also, there's a second pentadecathlon-on-pentadecathlon:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
o8b2obo2bo$o3bo3b2o$3o2bo2b2o3bobo$3obo2b5o3bo$2obo2b2ob2ob3o$4bobo3b

I think that depends on the definition of 'nice', because the plain old griddle-with-block has a smaller bounding box.

The Twitterbot reported a new natural period 3 oscillator. Does it have a trivial name?

Mark Niemiec's new database (mentioned by Calcyman elsewhere) calls this Cis skewed poles.

The above link is temporary, so don't post the URL to the Life Links page yet or anything, but it should be eminently usable if you take the results with a grain of salt. There are further updates to Mark's Life pages coming along, whenever Mark and/or I can find some time to concentrate on them.

Meanwhile, just paste some RLE into the big empty box and click "Search", and see if anything comes up... an 8-glider synthesis, in this case.

I feel I should point out that not all of the links seem to line up correctly with the still life images on some of the stamp pages (for example, try to select some of the bottom still lifes here). I also noticed that the search utility lists 114 still lifes with 4-glider syntheses, but the 4-glider synthesis page only lists 111 (this second page, for example, is missing 13.35).

There are actually 132 still lifes with 4-glider syntheses but no known 3-glider synthesis, so the database is obviously missing some information. Is there a plan on how to add new syntheses to the database? I can't imagine Mark being able to keep up with everything by himself.

One of the things I am planning on doing soon is to totally rebuild the 3- and 4-glider pages. The 4-glider pages may take a while, given how many new syntheses Bob Shemyakin has come up with recently. I'm currently in the hospital awaiting a bone marrow transplant, but should hopefully be returning home in about three weeks. My energy level for doing Life at that point may be variable, so I'm not currently promising any completion date!

No offense to your situation, but here are some more things (specifically errors) to keep track of, not including updates:
  • Main oscillators page (13-bit): jam is labeled as being P4
  • Main oscillators page (17-bit): 199 has been typed twice
  • Main oscillators page (17-bit): Silver's P5 on carrier is labeled as Silver's P5 on snake (the actual Silver's P5 on snake is correctly labeled)
  • Main oscillators page (18-bit): French kiss is labeled as unsolved, contradicting other parts of the site (although the table and (unusually) the color of the image label are both correct)
  • Triple/quintuple piston RLE: top half of one step (first in shortening process) is incorrect
  • Oscillators by period page: oscillators of periods 23 and 41 aren't yet known (unless if there's something you aren't telling us!)
  • Oscillators by period page (P8): label for blocker hassling P7 is colored as <1 glider/bit in image (and in the P8 oscillators page, but not in the tables in either case)
  • P3 oscillators page (22-bit): section is labeled as having five oscillators, when image shows six
  • P3 oscillators page (23-bit): section is labeled as having zero oscillators, when image shows one
  • Main oscillators page (22-bit): Elkies's P5 is labeled in image and table as being unsolved, contradicting other parts of the site
  • Main oscillators page (24-bit): P4 and P12 labels in image are swapped
  • Main oscillators page (24-bit): Merzenich's P10 is labeled in image and table as being unsolved, contradicting other parts of the site
  • Oscillators by period page (P10): dividing line in image is misplaced
  • Oscillators by period page (P10): 44-bit P10 labeled in table as taking 65 gliders (and in the P10 oscillators page, but not in the images in either case)
  • Oscillators by period page (P12): wrongly states that no such oscillators are true P12 oscillators
  • Double (skewed) eureka RLE: blocks aren't necessary
  • Oscillators by period page (P276): size label in image colored as >1 glider/bit (when that should only be used for the cost label)
  • Exotic spaceships page (Caterpillar): wrongly stated that it was engineered in 2013, when it was actually completed in 2004
  • Flotillae page (4-SS): stated that Ecologist is Gosper puffer plus MWSS, but a LWSS is instead present in the image

Something about the Eater 2 predecessor that appeared recently feels very loaferish.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 13, rule = B3/S23

Shemyakin, can you provide a 7z or plain zip version for 4gliders.rar? I'm on Linux and want to avoid legal issues.

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 5, rule = B2-a/S12

UnRAR is free software licensed under GPL with permission from the author, so it has no problems with patents either. What legal issues are you talking about?

I mean that it's not truly free (i.e. reverse-engineering the compression algorithm is not allowed). I don't trust RAR.

You don't have to trust RAR. You only need UnRAR to decompress an archive, and UnRAR is a free/libre open source software, also free from patent infringement issues. If you've got a problem with that, it's exclusively your own problem.
