One of my soups just made the 40 cell object again.
The omnibus has now appeared five times in the b3s23/C1 census:

I've never seen this unix variant before. Is it new?

EDIT: a quadrant can be stabilized.

This rather remarkable soup not only produces an unusual p3 oscillator; it also produces a temporary HWSS that at one point in time is the only active pattern in the entire soup. If the HWSS had escaped, The soup's score would be 42, higher than the current highest score in the Catagolue:

Code: Select all

Ahh, so now we have an incredibly inefficient glider synthesis for the p3, namely:
  • Construct all the junk that exists at generation 780.
  • Inject the HWSS.
  • Delete everything that isn't the p3 oscillator.
It would be amusing if this is the only known synthesis for the p3.

I wonder what the highest score was before the Catagolue? I once found a score of 40 from two quadpole-on-ships in the same soup (from a symmetrical piece of junk hitting a fleet).

Here's a 9G synthesis for the 22 cell p3 (may be further reducible, I was simply trying to find a 2G cleanup of the recipe.):

@simsim314
The most comprehensive collection of known oscillators is in the "osc" folder of jslife, which can be downloaded from this page. I also made an attempt to collect some oscillators that weren't included in jslife. This supplemental collection can be found here. There are some more oscillators that have been found since, but unfortunately I haven't kept very good records of them.

40 was about the highest I saw -- looks like I got four of those, if you count the two *WSS-on*WSS that showed up as 50's before they were added to the objects list. Saw one 39, and 38 was fairly common:

I also have one reported 49 from apgsearch 0.5, but I don't see why it isn't just a 37:

If I'm not mistaken, blockers are worth 24, so the score would be 24 + 18 + 7 = 49.

On a different note, the highest scoring soups seem to have the longest lifespans of any I've seen. However, if long-lived soups are governed by the same object-frequency rules as short-lived ones, it leads me to suspect that there are plenty of 20000, 30000, and even maybe 40000-gen methuselahs that have already been discovered by apgsearch and gone unreported.

This predecessor might yield at least a 13-glider synth, possibly less (maybe 4 for each tub predecessor, 5 for the edge-shoot prepulsar):

I think we should continue the fish theme. Something like Sailfish (the fastest fish in the world).

This is quite a reduction from 166 gliders for x66 (I guess that means x = 1? :P ), which goes to show that even symmetrical soups can still improve glider syntheses of life objects.

Once again, one of Adam's soups from the same census generates another spaceship, this time it's an object I've encountered once before in this very thread:

There is now a bi-pentadecathlon in B3S23/C1.

Code: Select all

#C [[ THEME 4 LOOP 750 AUTOSTART X 35 Y -40 ZOOM 4.44 ]]
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

@Simsim Yep, it is interesting to know that they occur naturally!

@Calcyman @chris_c Congrats for the discovery and synthesis! Never thought that would come out. I think that is the first pattern-found-by-a-search-program that is rediscovered naturally!

This particular x66 predecessor has the advantage that the halves are constructed separately. This allows for the construction of the HWSS-supported variant:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 30, rule = B3/S23

My latest haul in the D4_+1 symmetry has found a lightweight schick engine, and it takes ~60 ticks to emerge, which is more time than I expected. I'm really enjoying these symmetric search results that have been turning up.

Code: Select all

#C [[ THUMBNAIL ZOOM 4 LOOP 240 THEME 4 ]]
x = 31, y = 31, rule = B3/S23

Junk + two blinkers produces the rarest 11-bit SL on catagolue AND a HWSS. Odd.

Code: Select all

#C [[ THUMBNAIL AUTOSTART THEME 4 X 5 Y -4 LOOP 280 ZOOM 10 ]]
x = 12, y = 24, rule = B3/S23

Edit: finally figuring out the whole viewer thing..

A fumarole just occurred in B3S23/C1:

Code: Select all

#C [[ THUMBNAIL THEME 4 ZOOM 12 ]]
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

Same mechanism as previous fumaroles from recent soup searches -- all three converge to this reaction within a few ticks:

Code: Select all

#C [[ AUTOSTART THUMBNAIL GPS 2 ZOOM 19 THEME 0 ]]
x = 11, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
9b2o$2o$2o6bo$7bobo$6bo2bo$7b2o$10bo$2o$2o!
I don't remember if the confused two-headed spaceship has a name, but even if it's constructible with three gliders, it doesn't look like this will lead to any improvement on the current-best 7-glider fumarole synthesis. Just a few too many blocks and things to build and (mostly) clean up.

The two-headed spaceship reminds me of something they were talking about in this thread:
