I've a definition for you. I call it Linerae.

Lineraes are patterns that can be drawn in few second with simple mouse move inside golly. Here is Linerae 1 - it's the first Linerae that has 69,71 and 136 cells in the same horizontal line. Obviously we all knew about 136 dots line, by they weren't part of any Linerae before. Obviously generating long streight line inside golly with single mouse move, present serious challenge so 136 in a line is pretty nice result - and best known so far.

Obviously this is notable pattern because it's the first Linerae found, with the understanding it's not some "random pattern", but a Linerae.

There are some types of files that you can't upload to a forum thread as an attachment, but that's not the best way to publish RLE-encoded patterns. If you're saying that this doesn't work for you the way it works for everyone else, please explain in detail exactly what doesn't work. Exactly what happens when you follow the above steps?

Code blocks for patterns are a really important detail to figure out if you want other people on the forums to look at your patterns. It's much less convenient to copy patterns from images, or even to download them as files from some other site. Most people simply won't take the trouble, if you won't take the trouble to post the patterns in a convenient format.

Code blocks for patterns are a really important detail to figure out if you want other people on the forums to look at your patterns. It's much less convenient to copy patterns from images, or even to download them as files from some other site. Most people simply won't take the trouble, if you won't take the trouble to post the patterns in a convenient format.

An universe I have been working for: (an huge torus of 4000x4000 where you just go around the GOL universe and play with random things you may encounter)(as usual is pretty big)
...oops, is so big to fit in an code so I think I might put it in a zip file (as usual), in the attachment.
Believe or not, there are even extremely rare patterns, including those that were long considered non-natural (unknown to happen naturally)!

Both of the patterns are pretty interesting, and it's great you can appreciate them.

But there is absolutely no value in randomly combining two interesting patterns. It would be real "rake flotilla", if for example the flotilla would somehow be stabilized by the smoke of the puffer. In other words if you did some "actual work" to find this combination.

And even if it would, it would be considered "another useless discovery". Nothing extremely notable but fun to watch, and has some interest. Nothing that should be placed in the wiki, maybe in Jason Summers collection at best.

To be honest, I can assure with a good amount of certitude that every 8-cell reactions are known. (however, there is a lot of unknown after 20 cells. The recently discovered loafer, a 20-cell c/7, didn't need more, and it's the smallest non-c/2 ship ever discovered...)

Also, sadly, it couldn't even be a spaceship: the displacement is (3;1). A rake firing exactly the right stream (and it would be a strange, non c/2 rake) would shoot it's gliders farther and farther away, effectively creating a growing spaceship. A simpler way to solve this problem would be to put 2 rakes instead so that their input disintegrates. Of course, it only works if there is only one glider output...

The only remaining possibility woud be a (3;1) spaceship. But the quest for a (2;1) non-geminoid spaceship is already running, and has been one of the "Everest of Life" for more than 15 years already. A miracle could happen, but it's unlikely.

If you mean a knightship, the "miracle" happened last year, when HBK was constructed, because it's definitely not a geminoid.

It depends what you define by "known"? If you mean someone at some point run this setup - yes. But no record was kept and it's probably was done by script, and scripts miss a lot of things. For example people did run any combination of 9 cell to make sure no infinite growth appeared. But no one knows how much initial 8 cells contain a spaceship. Or how many 8 cells can be "ignited" by glider for infinite growth.

I've recently posted a list of 7 cells methuselahs (meaning 7 cells that last more than 800 generations). I needed it to discover new 10 cells infinite growth - and actually most of the currently 10 cells infinite growth were discovered last year, and half of them based on 7 cells methushelahs that I just find by random search and are not listed anywhere. Obviously people run a lot of 7 cells setups to find the most long living methushelah, but there is no recorded "list" of such (and my 7 cells list is pretty partial).

As for 10 cells - last year I've discovered around 20 new "10 cells infinite growth", so regarding "known" objects 10 cells is pretty much the limit of anything "known", that was somehow "covered" bottom up. 11 cells is already total jungle and no one made any exhausted search on it for any purpose that I know of.

1) Don't confuse "knightships" (2;1) and "camelships" (3;1) While it is well known that the fastest KS possible is p6, I'd say more p8 for a (3;1)

Gustavo in GOL interesting pattern are not defined as those that you discover. In GOL there is plenty of open and interesting problems that people try to solve, and they are usually connected to other problems.

You can't take something random and state it's interesting. For example herschel conduits weren't interesting because they were pretty, it was a great way to solve other problems - like building glider guns, oscillators, spaceships and computers. If you don't know what herschel conduits are, I would suggest to learn first before you jump to make "amazing discoveries".

There is NOTHING in GOL which is interesting just "because" someone find it. You might find some new interesting direction to explore, but then you need to explain how your direction of exploration or how your pattern is related to other GOL problems and research areas. How do you contribute to the whole area of GOL research. You CAN'T take random pattern and state it's interesting just because.

If you don't understand what I'm talking about, I would suggest to go over some threads in the forum and take a look at what other people are interested in, and what are the areas of exploration that exists in GOL.

Well, then, before you check a pattern, make sure it is even moderately interesting. As an example, this pattern has no value: I can draw a complete scribble, and as soon as a familiar object arises, post it as an "interesting" pattern. but that's not interesting. A previously unknown eater in interesting. A glider synthesis of a complex pattern is interesting. A reaction that can be exploited into a spaceship (And by this I mean, a plausible one) is interesting. A spaceship is interesting. An unknow oscillator is interesting. But a random pattern with a random output is not interesting...
Nobody knows every under 20-cells patterns, but is that a reason to post every single ones?

Ouch! Please don't get me involved here. This was discovered in 1970, along with every other collision of a small stable object with a single glider.

You're following in the footsteps of people from 45 years ago. Collision statistics started showing up in the very first issue of LifeLine, but in a much more organized way than you've managed so far. Many of these early discoveries were made with graph paper and a pencil (!).
