Methusynthesae

Post by Gustavo6046 » February 3rd, 2015, 9:22 am

Methusynthesae are a brand new category for the ConwayLife community. The one I discovered, Methusynthesis 1, is a big step and also have an good lifespan to balance it's small population and bounding box. See more info in the Lifewiki. I hate everyone saying my discoveries are non-trivial or non-notable, all I want is to document and include more patterns, somewhat bulk, and help LifeWiki by expanding it! Sorry if I reached a huge extent of emotion but anyways. THIS thread is the RIGHT one for discussing Methusynthesae and their purpose!

Gustavo you can't invent a category, and post some random pattern from this "pseudo category" and ask people to add patterns to it.

Here is my category: Randomnae. Here is the only known pattern from this category:

Code: Select all

x = 60, y = 60, rule = B3/S23

Thank you a lot lot lot lot lot! All I wish was to help the community, and you deserve my help as you supported my rather weird concept.
I accept it though I think it isn't much like a methusynthesae, it isn't composed of slightly modified or damaged spaceships, have you been using Golly's half-fill feature? :S

Hey as far as I see it our community needs people who are willing to do mildly obvious and yet productive tasks.

Here is very beneficial task for the community that everyone so far (including myself) are lazy enough to do. Take the latest glider gun collection and replace any inefficient period multipliers by Guam's semi-snark:

Code: Select all

x = 46, y = 51, rule = B3/S23
4$8bo$9bo$7b3o18$28bo$29bo9b2o$27b3o9bo$37bobo$37b2o2$22b2o$22b2o2$31b
2o$31b2o6b2o$39b2o3$27bo$26bobo$26b2o6b2o$34bo$35b3o$37bo!
I promise to include your name on any gun you've improved this way (at least where it depends on me), and people will appreciate your investment. There are somewhere between 10 to 50 such guns.

Hi Gustavo,

I'll refrain from commenting on the notability of this pattern, which others have already covered. Just thought I should point out that the plural of 'synthesis' is 'syntheses' (because it's from Greek) so I'd expect the plural of 'methusynthesis' to be 'methusyntheses,' not 'methusynthesae.'

Oops, thank you. Everything I knew about greek was "pyro", "mirmeco", "phobia" and "Zeus". :P Also I have mirmecophobia (fear of ants) with no doubt. This includes the rule Ants (I/DONT/REMEMBER) lol

Speaking of the glider gun collection, I found a way to make P690 smaller, but not using the reflector.
Left: P690 in collection. Right: Smaller P690.

Although I agree with you that the right gun looks smaller, the gun collections compare the bounding box. (I'm not sure why, since it's kinda counter-intuitive to use another shuttle to minimize bounding box and think of it as a smaller one.)

You can create any glider gun period with constant number of initial cells. Think of duplicator and three snarks, you just need to adjust the timing and placement properly.

On the other hand inside some box you can't place all the possible guns, as inside a box there is 2^(w * h) possible patterns (and thus periods), which limits your options. More precise for very large period N the optimal bounding box should be in order of magnitude of log(N), or in therms of bounding box a square with √log(N) side.

I and dvgrn have created a gun script that generates glider guns of logarithmic size for large periods (above 9K), and although the bounding box is not optimal the convex hull is.

“Methusynthesis 1” glider synthesis:

Methusynthesis oscillator?

Post by Gustavo6046 » February 4th, 2015, 5:14 pm

Thanks for the glider synthesis, although the result isn't exactly the Methusynthesis 1, thanks to two or three cells displaced, but yet have the surprisingly same lifespan. :P
Now that you are all talking about glider guns (although shouldn't), maybe putting some catalysts around a Methusynthesis 1 to surpress its debris and make a (oscillator?).
