I wanted to post a couple of ways the current frontend could be finished. They are both proposals for creating NE gliders on the left side of the ship. I posted this in the ConwayLife lounge discord a while back and I want to post them here just for good measure.
This design shows that we need 2 of the current frontend to have both supply gliders to each other. The one on the left can't be a copy/paste of the current frontend because gliders coming from the NW have a different reaction with LWSSs than gliders coming from the NE. It has to be built from scratch. Another problem is the 2 glider streams (light and dark green streams) must overlap without colliding for this to work. I haven't tested to see if it is possible to overlap without collisions yet.

For a while I was thinking of a solution shown here to create NE gliders coming from the left side of the ship (it's the 90 degree reflector mentioned in the second diagram) and I have tried constructing a NE reflector that doesn't resemble any of the diagrams in the above post. I tried making an alternative way to making this climber climb using gliders travelling NW, but I haven't found one that works so far.

If there is an alternative, I could use it to produce the NE travelling gliders by having a second stream of gliders collide with sparks (or with SE travelling gliders coming from the climber) to produce NE gliders.

I was thinking we could write a script to find all possible combinations of NW glider + Herschel reactions and weeding out the useless reactions while storing any potential reactions and using one of them. I don't know any python or lua, so I will cross post this on the Script request thread so someone could write a script for it (and maybe give it this project a little more attention).

It will work kind of like a helix except instead of a glider bouncing back and forth, a Herschel is used for half of the reaction instead. And it should go without saying, but the LWSSs seen above are travelling towards the front of the ship to create the block lanes.
I'm sure it's possible to make something like the above for this caterpillar, and the "slope" for the XWSSs would have to look like this:

I'm pretty sure that there isn't going to be version of this climber using a glider that's coming from behind. Not only does the back of the glider have the wrong shape for the fairly particular reaction that's needed, but there's no way for it to get there because the Herschel's explosion is in the way. The chances of a completely unrelated glider reaction producing the exact same output B by sheer coincidence are extraordinarily low, so I'd be incredibly surprised if such a plan succeeded. If it is the case that neither of those options would work. I can't really think of any other ways to make the frontend by avoiding exponential growth that starts with the size of the already existing frontend partial.

I came up with a new design for the frontend that might be able to reduce or keep the same rough size of the current frontend. It might also be able to solve the NE glider problem I have been having. I am already constructing some of the parts for the frontend.

If every XWSS in the XWSS lanes (brown line) is an LWSS, they will also be made with the above RLE. I am working on making a rake that will create the gliders in the above reflector and I will post it here when I finish. I already finished a sideways LWSS rake and it can be found as the last post in the previous page.

Progress I made so far on the above frontend design. It's not much and I'm having trouble figuring out how to complete it. Once the LWSS and XWSS lanes are finished and once the NW glider rakes in the above design is complete (not the blue lone the grey line) I can complete the caterpillar frontend.

Yes, this is all a reference to my diagram from January 6th.

The blue line in the January 6th diagram represents NW glider rakes that produce the NW gliders that will shoot NW gliders into the XWSS stream to turn them into NE-travelling gliders. These NW glider rakes already exist, and were made by AbhpzTa in this post. All that has to be done with these NW glider rakes is to align them properly on the block tracks (using rephaser rakes where necessary) so they can aim NW gliders at the set of XWSS streams so they can reflect the NW gliders to the NE direction.

The diagram has 2 types of grey lines. The grey lines labeled "NW gliders" are part of a WIP NW glider rake I'm building that has an output as seen in the rle in the same post as the Jan. 6th diagram. This stream of NW gliders will reflect the sideways LWSSs (which are the grey lines labeled "Sideways LWSS") 90 degrees to face upwards and "turn" into the red line in the diagram.

That is not the only problem. In fact, there are actually 3 remaining problems. The first problem is that I need to re-design your frontend (or make a similar frontend that uses the same idea as Upward LWSS + NE-travelling glider = block) so that NW gliders can travel through the LWSS streams, but I am having trouble with this. The second problem is that I am also having trouble building the NW glider rake that is responsible for reflecting the LWSS lanes. The third problem is the one you mentioned where we need to find a "set of XWSS streams to turn NW glider rake outputs into these NE-traveling glider streams".

Once all of these problems have been solved, and the part of the frontend in the Jan. 6th diagram is assembled, I can build the rest of the LWSS streams (the red line in the Jan. 6th diagram) using the Sideways LWSS rake + NW glider = Upward LWSS technology. If the XWSS streams are only made of LWSSs, I can use the current LWSS reflector technology to finish the rest of the frontend. Otherwise, if the XWSS streams contain MWSSs or HWSSs, new technology will have to be built that produces sideways MWSSs or HWSSs, and technology that reflects MWSSs and HWSSs upwards will also have to be built.

Great, thanks for the comprehensive summary! Let's see, I built that front end very quickly as a prototype, without worrying about permeability for NW gliders at all. I can try working on Problem #1 by rebuilding for maximum permeability, and see what happens.

Hopefully we can attract some more contributors to work on Problems #2 and #3. You've made a lot of progress, and have been very patient about asking for help. In my experience, most people are irrationally afraid of mega-spaceship projects -- and this one is looking to be more like a giga-spaceship, unless someone can come up with significant optimizations to the design (or new technology).

Have any other block-trail spacings come up that might work better for building rakes and rephasers, or should I just stick with the version from my prototype front end?

Not that I'm aware of, and no new ones have come up in this thread. I think you should stick with your version from your prototype.
