Interesting!
I wonder when a 2EC will pop up, considering that it's also a (rare) combination of two SE's.
There was a discussion about it in this thread three months ago.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

If switch engines are quite common, what's the chance of a 2-engine Cordership spontaneously appearing in soup?
Zero. It's ridiculous (a 2EC is larger than the 16-by-16 square seed).
And then I was proven flat-out wrong. I think the "it's ridiculous" part of my reply there comes from the Zondag met Lubach skit mocking Donald Trump's inauguration.

Soup with a beehive.
welcome to the forums!
While that soup indeed contains a beehive, it also contains a boat with tail, which is considerable rarer than the beehive. The beehive is pretty common so soups that produce it aren't very notable.

If you'd like to try soup searching, you should check out apgsearch! The wiki has an excellent tutorial located here: Tutorials/Contributing to Catagolue.

Just went looking for names, but "unnamed" does seem to be accurate. There's a notation in DRH-oscillators.rle:

#C 4.0.4 [DRH before 4/92]

Mark Niemiec's database calls it "20-bit P4 #1".

Along with xp4_04qkc1qqz1606621, this does seem to be one of the biggest and most active symmetric P4 things that have shown up in asymmetric G1 soups. There's a lot more stator and less rotor in most of the other entries.

A period-96 puffer based off of the switch engine is pretty rare, right? This appeared when I was apgsearching my custom symmetry that randomly places two switch engines and a block.

This P4 needs to be added to the wiki. I think the title would be 20P4 unless someone has a better name.

I'll call it four Ls because of how one of its phases looks, though two of those Ls are differently shaped.

It makes sense, since two of the Ls are L sparks and the other two are L-tetrominos.

Giving an oscillator a plural-sounding name for its singular form might be confusing. Maybe call it quad-L or something? I like the idea of a name having to do with four because that's also the period of the oscillator. (Figure eight is another name that references both its oscillator's period and appearance.)
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I think this P4 needs a name, since it is an edgy domino sparker, and it is statorless.

Mark Niemiec's database has it as "24-bit P4 #1", no synthesis; pentadecathlon.com calls it 24P4.1.

Catagolue has one C2_4 soup for xp4_g880anziaw5kze5011 but the oscillator shows up early, so converting to a glider recipe looks tricky.

Just wanted to mention that a new category yl72 has turned up in G1. The pattern consists of two block laying switch engines that are in sync such that the period halves from 144 to 72.

I believe that that's the mod, not the period. Wiki says that block laying switch engine is period 288.
Edit: Or maybe that's the period of the population growth, I don't know.

Following up from what HartmutHolzwart said, this is the soup that generates the newfound yl72 growth:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

No. But the population increases with period 72.

I believe that that's the mod, not the period. Wiki says that block laying switch engine is period 288.
Edit: Or maybe that's the period of the population growth, I don't know.
Yes. When it finds growing patterns, apgsearch ignores the pattern image itself, and only concerns itself with the populations of every generation. The resulting yl code reflects that period, the population increase every step, and a hash of all the populations of one cycle.

This is often the pattern's actual period, but can be half that in patterns with glide symmetry, and (more rarely) can be a fraction of the total period when an engine with a lower period is trailed by different kinds of junk for several cycles, but the junk has exactly the same population in each corresponding generation in each cycle.

It can also be a multiple of the engine's period, because only the total population of the ash is consideed; if there are multiple puffers, guns, and oscillators in the ash, the reported period will be GCD (population periods of all puffers and guns, and periods of all oscillators).

I think this P4 needs a name, since it is an edgy domino sparker, and it is statorless.

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
4bobo2bob3o$3bo2bobobobo$3bo$10bo$bobobobo2bo$3obo2bobo!

Is it possible to synthesize these inserts between the blocks?

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
