But that's only a bookend-on-bookend which is not that rare.
That particular isomer is, however. Whereas the standard bookends has 584,481,507 occurrences in C1 at this moment, that trans-mirrored version has only 11,877,925 occurrences, about twice as rare as a figure eight.

It can be formed from 5 gliders, which makes it not that rare, but rare enough. That makes this a "useless discovery" - i.e. it's of no practical use whatsoever, but it's still interesting enough to note (which, say, a standard pair of bookends would not). Also interesting is the fact that attempting the cleanup of one uncommon item ends up producing a totally different, but still uncommon, item.

To make this useful, one would need to stabilize the lower right corner. Unfortunately, there are a lot of dying sparks there, so it would be quite difficult to bring anything in that could save this (e.g. a bridged beehive) unless you first brought in some equipment to kill those sparks prematurely - and that equipment itself would have to come from nearby, impeding anything else you would want to bring in. The only thing that I can think of that might save this would be to smash random gliders into the corner, hoping that the mutated mess formed from the dying bits would somehow attach itself in a useful way. The likelihood of this working is a bit like throwing a series of grenades into a china shop ravaged by a bull, and hoping that the shards would re-arranged themselves into whole pieces of china. Things like that have been known to happen in life, but they are rare and hard to find.

No, it's not useless. It is a good target for practising glider synthesis, and here it is in 84G:

Previously, the conduit in this loop required larger sparkers than killer toads to work. Is this stabilization new, as of the quoted post? If so, it reduces the smallest p244 gun, p488 gun, narrowly sets a record for the p122 gun, and probably allows for usage in situations where the period otherwise wouldn't work out. I vaguely remember this conduit being paired with another left-turn conduit to have another pair of small guns somewhere, but can't find them at the moment.

This stabilization is new, since the original post (couldn't find it, don't know the keywords, but have seen it before) shows the user struggling to find stabilization for this conduit, and then they just gave up trying to make a stable one.

This would have been a nice B-heptomino hassler, but it works out such that this would be p58, so there's no room for the p29 sparkers required:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 30, rule = LifeHistory
11.D.3D$11.D.D$11.D.3D$.2C3.2C3.D.D.D$.C4.C4.D.3D$3.C3.C$2.2C2.2C$C2.

Maybe some p2 LLS results would do it.

Can you find a way using only one glider?

Here's a detail that is always worth double-checking carefully. That first glider could not actually have reached to the location where you drew it -- it would have been deleted by a spark from the galaxy well before it got there:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 11, rule = LifeHistory
15.C$14.C$6A.2A5.3C$6A.2A$7.2A$2A5.2A$2A5.2A$2A5.2A$2A$2A.6A$2A.6A!
See also Mark Niemiec's response, below.

It's fairly easy to check for one-glider deletions of a galaxy, or a clock (which you mentioned in another post) using gencols, or by editing the pd-glider.py/lua script in Golly, or by doing a little experimenting with the Seeds of Destruction Game:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 17, rule = LifeHistory
2.A$.A$.3A6$2A.6A$2A.6A$2A$2A5.2A$2A5.2A$2A5.2A$7.2A$6A.2A$6A.2A!

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 11, rule = LifeHistory
$3.A$.2A$3.2A$2.A4$9.3A$9.A$10.A!
Fair warning: I'll probably start moving these kinds of posts to this thread, until you get the idea about putting Sandbox-type posts in the Sandbox yourself.

If you want to collide gliders into something, it's important to make sure that the gliders could actually get into the specified position naturally. For example, when colliding gliders into a still-life or oscillator, move the glider back a multiple of the target's period, sufficiently far back that it's at least two spaces beyond the convex hull formed by all generations of the target. In this case, moving the gliders back 16 generations (4 spaces) accomplish this. You'll find that the lower glider is destroyed by the galaxy before it gets close enough to hit. It might be possible to actually synthesize a glider as close to the galaxy as you have it shown, but that would likely be quite expensive, and would probably defeat the purpose of the exercise anyway.

It's fairly simple to just try all possible one-glider collisions into the galaxy. There are 6 where the glider kills the galaxy, and 20 where the galaxy eats the glider. There is also one where the the galaxy safely transmutes the glider into a blinker. (There are a few others where the glider is transmuted into some still life, which then destroys the galaxy the next time around).

It should be trivial to search for every possible collision with an object and find the elimination reactions. One of my first Life related projects was cataloging all reactions, by hand, using punch cards, 45 years ago. (Was it really that long ago? Takes of shoes and socks ... Nope, 46 years. 1974. I feel old....)

First, determine the symmetry of the object. From that, you will know which directions the Gliders will need to come from, and which are duplications. Then for each remaining direction, start at one side and work your way to the other until you either hit the line of symmetry or the other side. Even by hand, it didn't take long to know exactly how many collisions there were and setup a run.

In bits and pieces, I eventually automated the whole process, and I got as far as doing stable objects up to 17 bits, and most oscillators up to that size, and somewhere around here I still have most of those files. (But for some reason, the Clock is one those missing objects.) To extract anything useful from those files any more would require some serious post-processing. I'm pretty sure someone could start over at this point and have the same results (and more) in a few hours. Think of it as an exercise for the student...

That should probably be in the H-to-G collection as NW36T371, since there's a gap in the old 2016 collection at that direction/lane number combination.

Both of the pieces of this, HF95P and PNW6T184, have been in the Elementary Conduits Collection for a long time, so this combination is not so much "useless" as just "already known":

It _is_ certainly less useful than it might be because of the 17-lane difference between the output gliders. To be able to separate the two outputs using Snarks, the gap would have to be 18 cells, so this is a very near miss.
