From my post in the "Useless Discoveries" thread last year (yes, I made the main script that long ago):

5x5 that produces LWSS, MWSS, and pulsar.

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
ob3o$4bo$o2b2o$ob3o$2o!

Call em insane, but I think that's wiki page worthy.

When doing research you first should define the metric, and then judge by this metric and not invent a metric that would place some pattern higher.

I do see the "point" in such finding, and I do consider it pretty rare and somewhat interesting, but as long as there was not recognized need for such a pattern, and it has no applications to other constructions, or answers general well established open questions on some topic, I wouldn't place it in wiki.

Consider such a question: how many other "interesting" patterns would use this finding? For pattern present in wiki, the answer should be more than one (unless the pattern itself is "interesting" on its own right like Gemini).

EDIT Consider this: not all smallest glider guns are in wiki.

Prodigal + eater:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
3ob2o$2o2b2o$7o$2o!
Integral + Shillelagh + Eater:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
7o$obobobo2$2bo!
You should add a custom starting point, if two people are searching a rule.

I'm searching 8x8 from here on out:

Shouldn't they, though? I always thought that the lack of articles in the LifeWiki for various interesting/noteworthy patterns was down to a lack of manpower - not enough people writing entries - more than anything else.

Obviously that's not to say that ALL patterns should have articles, and I do agree with you insofar as that I don't see how this soup, momentarily interesting as it may be, is really remarkable enough to warrant one.

But in general, if a pattern IS genuinely interesting, then so long as someone wants to write about it by all means let 'em! Over on Wikipedia it's said that Wikipedia isn't paper, and I think that applies to the LifeWiki too. There's no practical constraints on space as such; we can afford to have good articles on noteworthy patterns, and there's much yet to be written about.

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now. ;)
