Thread for Discord crossposts

Post by Hdjensofjfnen » January 17th, 2024, 11:36 pm

This is a general-purpose thread for humans or bots to crosspost important messages from the Conwaylife Lounge Discord, making them easier to be cited on LifeWiki or read by forum users.

Though this thread is intended to eliminate the barrier of finding the "right" thread to crosspost a Discord message in, please still post discoveries in their appropriate thread in the Patterns forum if applicable.

here's a glider-powered block keeper, such that the block can be read:

this is one step up from that any-input-safe toggle, could probably have some use in logic gates

I was told (offline) that Discord has a proof of "pseudo-oscillators" being minimally-separable into more than 4 pieces (thus unlike pseudo still lives) that works by introducing intersection component (so connection graph is no longer planar)

I don't think it's in News Archive on wiki, nor on any pages (tho that I might have missed)

Not much, it appears! Sorry, I went and looked on Discord when you posted this request, but didn't find any satisfactory answers, so then forgot to post the short string of posts that I did find:

I hate this with a passion
I'm drawing a blank on why LifeViewer is giving an "unsupported rule name" error, since the rule is definitely out there in the LifeWiki Rule namespace ... but given the GIF, maybe that doesn't really need to be sorted out.

The new version of safeopenclip.lua is able to find and load the rule into Golly with one click from the snazzy new HTML pop-up link page, and then the pattern works just as the GIF advertises.

It's because there's an error in the rule definition. The following line ends with a ) rather than a }. That's 15 minutes of my life I'm not getting back...

Code: Select all

var x = {1,2,3,4,5,6)

Wow -- but somehow Golly managed to use that version of the rule without complaining.

I'm tempted to go look at Golly's parsing code and see how it manages that, but that would be a lot more than 15 minutes of my life that I wouldn't get back.

In for a penny...

Golly's parser gets the final token in the line as "6)" and then uses sscanf() with a %u format (unsigned integer) to decode. Fortunately (for Golly) when sscanf() decodes integers it ignores anything after digits so this successfully decodes as 6.

On a not entirely unrelated note I've just fixed the rule on LifeWiki.

Seems like it still doesn't work. Maybe the cause is missing commas in the actual rules? (e.g. "0 1,1,2,3,0,0,0,0 6")
Edit: it worked after doing hard refresh.
